In our precinct, candidates earned a delegate for every 15 people supporting them. So for example, 60 people would earn 4 delegates, but 74 people would earn 4 delegates as well. This must be how more votes could equate to equal or less delegates.

I heard that one precinct got down to some pretty rowdy arguing.

Yes...they misunderstood the rules...they thought it said to create a raucous, instead of caucus!

I heard on MSNBC what also attributed to Obama's higher delegate count is that he won a lot of the rural areas, which are sparesely populated but still get some delegates.

I also heard that some states, such as Florida, award all the delegates to the winner. Should be an interesting season....
