O.k., where is this Jones Market you're talking about? I want to check out the coffee!!! I usually get mine at Costco, or occasionally at Sprouts when it goes on sale (they sometimes have New Guinea coffee, a favorite of mine).

It's the Russian market on Jones, in the same strip mall as Market 168. Armenian coffee is $4/pound.

Thank you NLVgal, I'm the "poster" and couldn't be more pleased by your kindness. No kids, don't eat red meat, diabetic in the house and precious little cooking skills HOWEVER, I'm going to see what I can take from what you and Scoop have said and see how it applies.

I know there's some nuggets in there. Thank you so much for all the time and effort.

My addition is dry goods, paper towels, Tissues, every so often you see them for really cheap at Target
Take advantage and buy 30 - and store them, you save about 50% off retail and they never spoil.

Also target has promotions you buy 4 you get $5.00 off, Buy 16 you get $20 off!!!

Roughly 15 years ago, my wife and I decided we needed a new hobby. We decided on cooking because nothing pays more immediate rewards.

I started with Alton Brown's "Good Eats" TV show, Julia Child (the later years are basically useless, though), and Iron Chef (the Japanese version). You can also learn plenty from old episodes of Molto Mario. Most of these episodes are up on Youtube*, commercial-free for people who want to learn.

Once I got a copy of the Les Halles Cookbook, that was it. That's a great cookbook to learn from. But you need a fairly solid foundation.

Cooking isn't merely a hobby, or a vocation, or something that people do -- it is a life skill. Emphasis on life. Knowing how to cook well truly does pay immediate rewards. Good cooks eat better and spend less doing it. The great foods of the world were born from poverty, scarcity and necessity, after all. Gourmet food is the food of the poor cook with more time than money.

It's so much easier to learn now than when I started. I was stuck with books and waiting for the handful of decent cooking shows to air. Now you can YouTube "how to small dice and onion" or "how to peel garlic" or "how to bake a baguette" and some helpful cook/chef has a video, for free. You will find that in general, chefs and cooks are helpful people who don't keep their recipes or procedures top secret.

* For instance, here's Alton's episode on how to cook Thanksgiving dinner. Most of the information is spot on and close to what I do.

(But you can't just watch the episodes. You have to DO this stuff, too. Muscle memory is a thing, and must be practiced until it's learned. Also, expect to mess up often. Learn from that. Eat the mistakes if you can. Compost them if you can't. It's still cheaper and better than buying "food" with a bar code.)

For the diabetic in the house, any of the cookbooks / recipes aimed at the low carb dieters are a decent place to start. Gabby, who writes brokeassgourmet.com does low carb. Her porterhouse with grilled cherry tomatoes and balsamic vinegarette is awesome. I'm sure you could do it with grilled chicken since you don't do red meat.

Thank you! Will definitely be checking it out! We're staying at the Gold Coast and the Orleans, so it won't be too far out of the way.

The medium roast is better IMO than the dark roast. More caffeine.
