I have narrowed down my search for apartments that I want to check out when I come into town next week. Tentative move date is May 2008. Can some of you locals give me some insight to these places possibly? Location, area shopping, is it shady? I plan on visiting both during the day and at night, and during the week and weekend. Thanks so much! Here's my list:

Eagle Crest - Sky Pointe Drive
Camden Pines - S. Torrey Pines Drive
Oasis Palms - N. Rainbow
Summerhill Villas - N. Tenaya Way
The Meadows - Mission Laguna Lane

Eagle Crest - Sky Pointe Drive - Far northwest corner, I believe. A pretty nice area. Lots of new stuff recented opened up there. My friend actually used to work in the area, and she really liked. This would probably be my number one choice.

Camden Pines - S. Torrey Pines Drive - Right next to a wealthy country club, but aside from that, the surrounding area varies. It's an older part of town and it shows. Close proximity to the strip.

Oasis Palms - N. Rainbow - Convenient to shopping, but also near a rougher area.

Summerhill Villas - N. Tenaya Way - Fairly good area. Despite being only a few streets west, Tenaya is a huge improvement on Rainbow. This would probably be my second choice.

The Meadows - Mission Laguna Lane - Rough area! Avoid at all costs.


So yeah, I'd probably go with either Eagle Crest or Summerhill Villas.

The Meadows isn't a rough area, its in between two senior communities, i would think it would be very quiet...

Camden Pines is in a nice area and convenient to shopping and Chinatown and some other restaurants..., and Oasis Palms is in a very urban area, it is nice, if you want to be convenient to a lot of stuff, like movies, shopping, and the casinos, but that complex may be a little rough...

seriously, I would look at apartmentratings.com and remember apt complexes attract the worst kind of people and they are pretty homogenous across the valley...

I know some people in Eagle Crest. We scouted apartments for them before they moved here and Eagle Crest was among the nicer ones. They're not very cheap, though, and they charge a LOT for water (they pay around $35/mo to the managers for water, while we pay about $9/mo for the water at our house). The apartment (roommate style 2br/2ba) is fairly nice, but perhaps overpriced. The complex has two pools, weight rooms, small theater type rooms with projector TVs for hosting movie nights or whatever... the amenities are nice.

The neighborhood seems to be decent. We visit every week or two and haven't seen anything that turned us off of the complex. Be aware, though, that they have a pretty bad roach problem (which is pretty normal in LV).

I'm sure the roach problem people talk about are the summer roaches, the giant ones that come out from underground when it's really hot, not to be confused with the little brown german roaches that fill most low income apts everywhere.
It's not a normal thing in LV having roaches as roommates.

I have a friend that lives at Eagle Crest. Her apt is nice, although a little small. The grounds are nice with barbecue grills all over the place, lots of tree's and pretty much quiet. Close to lots of shopping and US95.

It's the area right by the Meadows Mall, which is known for being rough....

Thank you all for your responses, I have a lot of reading and decision making to do on the plane. I'll be the one getting off the plane in a short sleeve t-shirt! On my way to work this morning, my car temperature read 4 degrees!!


Oh, one last question...when the apartments say pet fee, I'm assuming for cats and dogs, but what about small parrots/birds? I mean, mine is in his cage most of the time except when I'm home or in the same room, he has a perch/playgym that has a paper bin underneath to catch the droppings. Do you think I'll be charged for the pet fee for a bird? Thanks!

You'll likely be charged for the bird. We rent our house and the management company said that it doesn't matter what type of pet - they charged us double the standard pet deposit because we have two pets - a cat and a bird. Apartments may be different.. your mileage may vary....

What type of bird? We've got an african grey that I've had for about 14 years. He's quite a character...

Just saw you were from Buffalo... fellow NYer here (albeit I'm a "downstater"), LOL!

I thought the same thing this morning, when I awoke to 20 degree weather. I know it's only like, 50-something in Vegas right now, but compared to 15-20 degrees with wind chills below zero, I think I'd take Vegas over this anyday!

Swagger: I have a Sun/Jenday Conure named Micky. He'll be 7 years old in July. He talks up a storm and imitates the Microwave beeps! He says, Be good boy, go nite nite, gimme kiss, love you, hi, step up, bye bye, Hi baby, and yells out Nemo...his goldfish friend. He also whistles Yoo Hoo!

Davey Jones: Today's a little warmer, 27 degrees, but I made my way to work in a whiteout, 20 mph winds and snow covering the roads! UGGH!!! I cannot wait to get out of this crap!
