RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A Nevada man who was accused of murder after confronting two unarmed trespassers with a deadly barrage of gunfire at a vacant duplex he owns was found not guilty Friday of all charges in the latest case to test the boundaries of stand-your-ground self-defense laws.

An interesting case on a subject I was a bit curious about. Coming from Massachusetts, this guy would have been charged with murder without a doubt. While I'm a bit torn on this particular case, I'm glad Nevada has such a law (If someone breaks in, I'm not waiting to ask why). Last I heard, Vegas has had a bit of a problem with squatters. Would such a case set a precedent for forcibly removing squatters from a home?

That was one thing I had to get used to moving from Texas to California. In Texas, my house was broken into twice, and the cop explicitly stated that I would have had no problem had I been home and decided to take care of it myself. I just hope I'm not in a situation in the next few weeks before I finally can leave CA where I have to make that decision. Well, really, I'm hoping I am NEVER in that situation ANYWHERE, but much less somewhere that I could be charged for murder.

The Nevada gun law is you are being threatened with deadly force, the squatters must of had some weapon or action that justified him killing them. IE if someone breaks into your house you brandish a weapon, they turn and run and shoot them, you are guilty of a crime.

I think that anyone, no matter what, that breaks into your house, not only deserves to die, but should die, and at your hand.
I am not going to break into anyone's house or car. It's their property, and it's a huge violation to do so.
You are a piece of feces if you do.

There not stealing anything... do they deserve to die for seeking shelter?

Are you going to take the time to ensure that somebody climbing through your window is in need?

I don't know about that. It would seem as though as long as you can show that you felt threatened, your chances are reasonable. There was actually a case in summerlin a few years ago where a homeowner killed an unarmed individual that had only made it into his back yard and hadn't even attempted any forced entry yet. It was ultimately ruled self defense.

Jonathan

If I live in a building owned by someone else, do I not pay rent?

You should assume that every intruder will use deadly force. How do you know what drugs they have taken? There are many street drugs that make people violent. Should you wait until they hurt you to take them out?
