where to raise a jewish family in Las Vegas?
We are looking to relocate to NV from PA. Can anyone suggest a city/neighborjood where my kids will not be the only jewish kids in their classes? We've already had enough of that in the Poconos. Thanks for your help!!

You'll find Jews mixed in with the other religions in most parts of Las Vegas, though there's not a bit Orthodox population if that's what you're looking for. In general, people in NV really don't care what religion you are, so it's doubtful that your kids would have a problem even if they were the only Jews in the class- most likely no one would even know.

Summerlin and Desert Shores both house Synagogues. There is a Hebrew schol in Summerlin and a new Jewish High School abuilding. The local high school has a significant jewish population . There are substantial Jewish population in almost all the middle class neighborhoods.

Most likely they wouldn't be the only Jewish kids in any Las Vegas School except in the old westside which is mostly black (Westside is not the western side of town anymore BTW), or in parts of town such as is found on the eastern side which is mostly Hispanic. Vegas doesn't really have that much in the way of ethnic neighborhoods. Desert Shores is a pretty mixed area but seems to have a large Jewish population. The Jewish folks there just built a rec center on one of the lakes. It is one of the nicest neighborhoods in town. But it's nothing to worry about here anyway. Compared to the east coast, Nevada is like a different country, so you can't make those neighborhood comparisons here. There is at least one school, which I think is run by Temple Beth Shalom, that a lot of non-Jewish people send their kids to as it is a good school. I believe that there are lots of Jewish people in Summerlin, as well as most parts of town.

Actually the east side of town has a fairly large Jewish population...there's an orthodox congregation on Eastern and Desert Inn, and a huge Kosher Market and restaurant at Tropicana and Topaz and a kosher restaurant at Swenson and Twain...another congregation is at Pecos and Flamingo, and then there is Congregation Ner Tamid, which is a huge reform synogogue in Henderson...

I moved here from NY 11 years ago, we were conservative Jewish and now practice more reform judaism. We Live on the Northwest side of town, (North of Summerlin) and our temple is in Summerlin. As stated by earlier posters the jewish community (other than orthodox) are dispersed throughout the city. I am part of the brotherhood of my temple along with my son going to hebrew school and my daughter starting next year. If you would like more information feel free to email me. A bigger concern should be moving into a good school zone.

anywhere I have lived in Las Vegas, whether it was a Jewish "area" or not, I was still the one of the only kids in class that didn't celebrate Christmas, because most of the Jewish kids in the public schools are either half-Jewish, non-practicing, or celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah
most of the private schools have the ones that are practicing or Orthodox...

There are actually 2 Jewish schools in Summerlin.
A kindergarten (Temple Beth Am) ( Temple Beth Am Kindergarten - Las Vegas, Nevada - NV - school overview)
And the elementary school Buzz was talking about (SS Day School) ( ssdslv :: Home)
