So no high achievers with children move to Manhattan or the other Boroughs? You really have a worse school system than Clark County.

Face it. Schools are mostly a middle and down issue. The upper middle and better can take care of their own anywhere. The owner of our brokerage sends is kids to Henderson International. The part owner and often night manager at our local Steiner's has two kids in Meadows. Adelson wanted a place for his two kids so he built one. The well off over at Rancho and Alta send their kids to the Catholic School.

High achievers in Manhattan are making multiple seven figures a year, or more. They send their kid to high end private schools, at $25-40,000 per year per kid, if they can get them in.

The economy in Vegas won't support this.

Vegas is a gambling mecca that people trek to in order to make bad decisions and lose money.....

Why would consider this area for raising a family?

Oh jeez, here we go again

CCSD is no different than any other large system in the country, it has very well performing schools and schools that are frankly **** poor. There are several issues that CCSD has:

1. Very top-heavy bureaucracy-Puts a ton of pressure on those at the school level where they can't do their jobs thus turnover is frequent.
2. Parents who simply don't care-They are not involved whatsoever and get mad to the point of threatening bodily harm on the teachers (go to Education forum on why Arizona teacher's are leaving in droves)
3. Kids don't care-There are some wannabe gangbangers out there.

And people, let's not forget that high end private schools have their share of problems with drugs and crime.

I would not be surprised if some of this is just East Coast bias, and I'm well aware of it having attended an Ivy League school after going to high school in the 49th ranked state for education in their survey, Arizona.
You don't need statistics to know most people in Vegas are uneducated. All you have to do is interact with people. Have you ever done this?

Do you think bartenders, strippers, and blackjack dealers are the sharpest tools in the shed?

Vegas was never meant to be an intellectual Mecca.

Want to know why the kids are not learning? Look at where many teachers get their credentials, the Western Governors University is nothing but a gov't sponsored diploma mill designed to churn out below average moms into (drum roll) TEACHERS

Some problems are not solvable (the Goldbach conjecture, the Reimann hypothesis, etc). Perhaps "...everyone ends up reasonably well educated" is not achievable.

I think some of it is the definition of well educated. A couple generations ago, students could choose to focus on industrial arts or vocational arts instead of focusing on a college-prep track. At some point, out of political correctness, we decided that was a bad thing. Nowadays, all schools seem to attempt college prep, and in the real world there is nothing wrong with pursuing a trade instead of going to university. There is plenty of space in the country for HVAC techs and electricians; not everyone should go to a university.

Of course. But you need to know with some certainty that you cannot educate all...and how to draw the line. And that is the experiment we don't run. I expect the finding will be that some are in fact not educable...but most are with sufficient help...but we are not willing to deal with that.

We might also work out how we propose to deal with those who are not conventionally educable.

Our present posture seems to be to hold tight to a system that fails badly. That of course is dumb.

Separate districts aren't necessary to divide families that value education vs families that don't. Zoning already accomplishes that.

It will, however, do two things:

1) Increase the achievement gap that already exists between these schools, as teacher salaries in higher-achieving and better funded districts would lure any good teachers from low-income schools.

2) Increase taxes for all as more pointless administrative positions are created.
