Good job on the research. Your right though. I would shoot the author. She is not too.....you know......

Funny how the author is bragging about all the state parks and recreation but almost all her mentions are in Utah and Arizona. So with what she herself said, why is she claiming Las Vegas has it all when it is indeed in other states and NV counties?

i don't understand why this is a hard concept...it is the proximity to those places, not the actual location of them. of course there isn't great outdoor activity in las vegas...its a city! but it is a big city near recreation.

one of the biggest benefit to living in milwaukee is that chicago is only about an hour or so away...does it matter that it is in IL rather than in milwaukee county? not at all. same can be said here. i don't care that some of the best hikes to the colorado river are on the AZ side...they are still close (w/in an hour). does it matter that zion is in UT? i used to drive up there when i lived in LA...i am so happy to be 4 hours closer now that i live in LV.

location, location, location.

This is the reason there are so many people from Socal, its because of the proximity to family. I know that's one plus for me living here.

hmm....hadn't considered that aspect of it, but it is nicer having my NM and CO relatives 4 hours closer as well.

I cant speak for everyone that comes from SoCal, but if family is important, it's nice to have only a few hours away if you have a family gathering or special event. I also like to take those weekend roadtrips to the beach when i want to. I'm actually closer to those in Socal than I was when I lived in Norcal.

couple of hours closer assuming no traffic...traffic in CA can always be an issue. i assume that from here (LV) and back from soCal is better than from LA and back on the weekends (if that made any sense...). friday afternoon/evening traffic from LA to here often sux...as can the sunday trip back. is the same for the reverse?

ughh...sorry 'bout that. blink once if you understood my gibberish, 17x if you didn't

- I get it! I also like the fact that we have 10 flights to LA or Bay Area from McCarran every day.

If Vegas was ever rated #1 for that then the article was either paid for by the City or the Casinos.

A city with "activities" 1.5 to 3 hrs away should not be included. We do have Lake Mead and yes we have a boat and enjoy it at times and the desert can be great to hiking in at times, but you have to understand Vegas weather it's either too damn hot in the summer(105-117, too damn cold in the winter(low 40's-low 50's-Highs) and too damn windy in the spring. That leaves you with the fall, late September to, if your lucky, Thanksgiving and that period is what I would call great weather.

There is one thing that is GREAT about this town's weather and that's the summer nights if you've never been outside at 12am to 4am in the summer when it's 90 degrees still and there's a very light breeze blowing, well then your missing out. That is what I would call perfect weather.

Then again it's the middle of the night and you have to worry about all the drunks, murders, carjackings, robberies, assaults. Ok, Ok there are "parts of town were you don't really have to worry about this, but then again there are many parts were you do.

Vegas has some very nice things about it but also some very bad things(the population growth the last 4-5years has really killed it). If you're thinking of moving here and you have kids, please don't put your kids through the torture of having to deal going to school in what now is getting closer and closer to equaling East LA, the schools here are horrible and dangerous for your children, doesn't matter what part of town you live in, put them in private school if you insist on moving here. If your young and single I would say go for it as long as you "know" you can stay away from the gambling and alcohol, it's a great party town for the young ones with plenty of jobs.

I'm not here to "bag" on Vegas so people don't move here and add to the population growth. People will move were they think it's better then where they currently are, just make sure you know what your getting into. Far to many people on here paint Vegas as a wonderful town with no or very small problems, it's simply not true.

Something that a lot of people can't understand about the west in general and LV in particular is that once outside the city, there ain't nuthin nor nobody out there. We have a 75 mph speed limit on our roads outside the city, even the two lane ones. Why? Because the Federal government threatened to take away our highway funds if we didn't impose a speed limit. Yes, that's right. We tried to go back to the pre-"gas shortage" law of having no speed limit in Nevada after the end of the infamous double nickle imposed by Tricky Dicky Nixon on every state to justify his phony gas shortage. Plus, nobody uses the highways in Nevada much anyway. The Feds also imposed a larger State Trooper force on us so we've got cops we don't need out there covering hundreds of miles of empty highways. About the only cars some of them see are other Troopers. We are used to driving long distances in empty country, and not many people hold it down to just 75, so we are perfectly willing to drive 350 miles to Ely to go fishing for the weekend, and average 85 or 90 all the way. Driving 3½ hours to Zion NP to camp and hike, or to Bryan Head to ski is not an issue with most people. Taking in the plays in Cedar City during the summer is a great weekend trip. Heading down to Disneyland with the family is nothing. I know a certain news anchor who was married to an airline stew, and he would fly down to LA for haircuts. It's only a 25 minute flight. Get used to the wide open spaces and you'll never live anywhere else.

Although a small thing the speed limits are actually -

15 north/east towards St. George, UT - 75mph
15 south/west once you hit California - 70mph
95 north/west to Tonopah,NV - 70mph
95 south/east to Kingman, Az -70mph
93 north to Ely, NV - 70mph

So you might look up every now and then while your doing 90 and check those speed limits again. Hurts a lot more when your 15+ miles an hour over the speed limit and the trooper finds you.

These are the max speeds you can do on any stretch of the above highways and the little two lane ones (95,93) run through many, many, many small towns, were your GOING to do the 25 mph speed limit or the local law WILL get you. Not to mention the fact if you have a blow out and crash at those speed with your Family in the car. Heck when your young and single we all did the speed thing(135mph on a motorcycle and 140mph+ in cars to many times to remember) but now your families in the car with you at those speeds. You should really sit back and think about it before you kill them or someone else(just a thought, not preaching). If it's so far away you feel like you need to go those speeds, well then maybe it's too far away for the weekend:-).

Been on all these roads many, many times and your right once your out of town to the north there's usually very little traffic. To the south forget about your 85-90 all the way.

Telling new folks it's great here and that they can drive off on 700 mile round trip weedend getaways all the time seems a little irresponsible.

The vast majority of poeple moving here and the low-middle income people living here simply can not afford the $100+ for gas + food + lodging everytime they want to go outside to do something. Let alone the 5 hour drive each way. They are therefore stuck in a town with very little to do outside. I have over a 100 trips to SoCal since we moved here 13 years ago and have done many, many trips on all the other major roads out of town and the beautiful and wonderful wide open spaces equal this from Vegas(approx.)-

93 - ELYNV - Brown mountains and desert for the first 100 miles
95 - Reno,NV - Brown mountains and desert the whole way
15 - St.George, UT - Brown mountains and desert for the first 120 miles
95 - Kingman, Az - Brown mountains and desert for the first 60 miles(then some trees then some more desert forever.
15 - SoCal - Brown Mountains and desert for the first 250 miles then lovely LA

I for one have grown tired of spending my life driving to places to enjoy the outdoors, but I am happy there are still some that love spending their lives in a car/truck for most of the weekend instead of outdoors enjoying it. This means thankfully most of you will stay in Vegas.
