I will be graduating from ASU in less than four months and I'm trying to figure out where I want to live. I'm graduating with a liberal arts degree, but I've decided that I want to become an accountant, so my plan is to get a job doing accounting/bookkeeping clerical work while I simultaneously take night classes at a local university (in this case, UNLV), eventually getting a MS in Accounting. I think it would be fun to eventually get a job doing accounting work for a major casino. I'm also interested in the real estate aspect of the casino/resort industry, as well as real estate development in general (which is in the pits right now, I know). I enjoy a lot of different kinds of places and there are a bunch of other cities I'm also interested in living in: Denver (where I'm from), San Diego, Los Angeles/Orange County, and possibly Tucson, AZ, just to name a few. But obviously, Las Vegas is what's on my mind the most. I understand that Las Vegas cannot be compared to Denver, San Diego, or LA. But let's compare it to Phoenix, two desert cities 6 hours apart.

I've actually been to Vegas well over a dozen times (I have some family in the Summerlin area), so I know what the area looks like, both on and off the strip. I've taken mini excursions to Lake Mead, Mt Charleston, Red Rock, and I'm a huge outdoors lover, so I have a good idea about that aspect. I've also walked around UNLV before, so I know what that college is all about. I've heard that locals never hang out out on the strip, which I find a little hard to believe, but I've also been inside some of the off-strip locals casinos (Red Rock and the Suncoast). Red Rock Station in particular was very impressive. What I'm hoping to get is more of an "insider's" perspective here. Do you think a move from Phoenix to Las Vegas for someone my age (22) would be a step up or a step down?

Las Vegas would be better for somebody your age if you're not easy side tracked and if you don't have any bad habits.
The city is very livelyand dynamic and has lots to ofter as far as clubs, nightlife etc
It was rated the #1 place to live if you like outdoor activities, since its centrally located to so many natural attractions within a half a day's drive or so.

Where did you find that claim? Now Im starting to sound like olecapt. A quick search yielded me many "best place to live for outdoor activities" but Vegas was never mentioned. Entertainment and night life yes indeed but not outdoor activities.

There are many great things to do outdoors here (in the winter only) but not the very best in the counry.

No matter......to the OP you will do just fine here.

I also read this late last year. I know someone posted a link, but its true because of the proximity to other cities in the AZ, CA and UT

I believe the link to that article was posted in Sheriff's 'LV is a Cesspool' thread where I think someone posted it to counter all his negative ones. You might want to sift through the almost 90 pages of it, or try the search function.

I don't think there is any particular difference between the two cities.

If your interest lie in such areas as Casino or Hotel Accounting there is pretty much Vegas. Vegas is smaller and easier to get around. Much better place to be 22 on balance.

Yes. A few newbie posters claim LV is a great place for outdoor activities, I can only assume due to the proximity of beautiful Utah, and Arizona, which boast a large number of national parks. But LV; hardly. Let them discover that for themselves. If Death Valley, and Lake Mead excite you, LV is a good choice. In the realm of day to day outdoor activities, LV is amongst locales with the lowest observable rate of activity I have ever seen, unless perhaps dirt biking is your thing.
