I haven't smoked for over 30 years, so smoke does bother me. I remember about 5-10 years ago when you went to a casino the air was very thick with smoke. It even made your eyes water.
But in the last 4 years the casinos have installed very efficient air removal systems. Unless you are sitting right next to a smoker, you cannot see or smell the smoke. I am very sensitive to smoke and I can gamble in any of the casinos and lose my money just like as well as a smoker...

The casinos that I avoid are Imperial Palace, Ballys, and Harrah's. The air is thick and causes me to have respiratory problems. We rush through Bally's from the monorail and I literally try not to breathe when passing through.

I would think opposite. I would think the casinos that cater to the world would go smoke free first. Not sure how successful they will be... The little ones already stink from years of it and they have their locals that go there and spend and smoke!

There was a joint across from the Stardust, years back, that opened as the FIRST NON SMOKING CASINO in Nevada......there's no need to remember the name cause it went belly up.....there was a Casino on an upper floor of the OLDE MGM [now Bally's] that was a NON SMOKING CASINO.....no need to get directions to it....it's closed.....

Now....POSSIBLY things like this might work NOW BUT.....who wants to risk the money on a POSSIBLE???????

And it isnt just Las Vegas.....the OLD ATLANTIS Hotel in Atlantic City [formerly the Playboy]. they had a non smoking Casino on the 3rd floor.....EMPTY all the time.
When Canada casinos went smoke free, there was a huge rush to the Detroit casinos. They are always packed while the Canada casinos have lost business. They have opened even larger non smoking areas in the Detroit ones and it appears that their air systems work very well.

The bars in Detroit have suffered immensely by the ban. I have seen signs in parking lots asking where all the whining non-smokers are. I have heard numerous interviews with bar owners, wait staff and even the bands that play there, all claiming that business really "stinks" now. Nice job. I agree that smoking should not be around food, but it appears there was a control issue by the non smokers to "win" and then they do and apparently don't even go in the bars. If you do see a busy bar, the parking lots are full of smokers, but they aren't buying drinks out there. Should have left bars to the owner's discretion. As others have suggested, you don't like it, don't go.

As far as the Las Vegas bars go...I have been in only one where they weren't smoking at least at the bar and that was Buffalo Wild Wings. It was so empty in there our voices echoed when we whispered.

When talking about smoking in LV casinos, it's interesting to look at what happened in poker rooms there.

In 2001 Mirage and Bellagio banned smoking in their poker rooms. They did this after player surveys indicated most favored the ban. There was grumbling from some of the smokers, but the ban didn't hurt business much. Over the next few years, most poker rooms banned smoking, as well. Off the top of my head, Boulder Station still allows smoking; there may be one or two others.

Now, poker rooms are different from the casino floor---smaller, at least semi-enclosed space; lower ceilings; and games with 9-10 players plus the dealer sitting elbow to elbow. In the casino, higher ceilings and ventilation reduces the smoke somewhat.

I would guess that today, most players, especially younger ones who never played when smoking was allowed, can't even imagine such a thing. And quite a few players who do smoke, now prefer the non-smoking rooms.

The key point, to me, is non-smoking poker rooms happened because the players asked for them. When enough casino players start asking for smoke-free casinos, it will happen. It will start with one or two properties, most likely higher-end places, just as the poker rooms started with the B and Mirage (the two premier rooms at the time.) Slowly, it will spread to other places. But the change has to come at the request of the players---trying to legislate a ban would backfire. imho.

I agree, but if they banned smoking all together, then the players who do smoke would have to go outside and in a casino that can be a long walk. Casinos do not want their players to go that far and be gone that long. That is money lost.

FWIW Arizona Charlie's on Decatur also has a smoking poker room. I think it is the only other one in Las Vegas. The other 55 or so are all non smoking.

One factor at play in the poker room situation is probably the fact that nonsmoking players consider it to be to their advantage not to allow the smokers to smoke. They figure it'll make them play poorly -- thus they'll be more vocal than they might be if it was something that didn't involve any money.
