Military and military related jobs contribute significantly....

I remember a million years ago when I was at Nellis, they use to pay ONCE a year in $2 bills [90 percent of the lower end guys were cash basis for everything]....the flood of $2 bill that hit the local economy was amazing.....
I recently entered Nellis, and the sentrys were a civilian security company. I wonder how many civilians work at the base?

I believe that the civilian population outnumbers the GI's but I no longer have those numbers....too many years.

I just looked on their site and it made no mention of personnel numbers.....

At any rate, seems Nellis is close to a non-factor; as the base would exist without tourism, and tourism would exist without Nellis.

But the moving trucks keep rolling in. I hope these people have jobs already, or they will be heading to Downtown to make some money the ugly way. I feel that my fiance and I were very lucky when it came to employment as we talk to other people. Jobs are not easy to land here.

This is becoming a common trend. Civilian employees outnumber military personnel on most installations. And the private sentry's are a test program right now to see if it would be cost effective. It is, however, not looking good for them. If Nellis follows the trend that the other bases are, these people will be adding to our unemployment rate soon.

What do you mean, heading downtown to make some money the ugly way?

In general the military bases have more civilians than military. There is also the same sort of multiplier effect as the casinos. For every soldier or civilian you get three outside jobs. Nellis is a big deal.

On the job front residental construction is in the absolute pits. The mostly hispanic work force is in deep trouble. Many, particularly the legal, were able to transit to the commercial industry. But many who did very well for a lot of years are trapped with no way to replace their incomes.

It is interesting to contrast Phoenix and Las Vegas. Phoenix has a very low unemployment basically because in-migration has basically stopped. Las Vegas continues with a 5K a month number and sees higher unemployment. In fact Las Vegas was hit less hard than Phoenix...but their numbers are better.

I am most concerned for those locals with long careers in the residental arena who are in trouble. Hope we get some level of turnaround before too long so they are not driven out of their homes and out of town.

I think he's feeding the stereotype that downtown is primarily known for its crime, which I think is BS.
