I haven't seen $1.50 domestics since I went to a divey college bar in Nola. Actually, here in Austin a place called Black Sheep Lounge does WT Wednesdays, where they have $1 cheapo beers, like PBR tallboys and Schlitz and the like, but I haven't been there since it's like 20 miles from my apt. But, I digress, thanks for the suggestion, Scoop!
Here's a couple reference points for the bars I mentioned earlier to give you an idea:

At Rum Runner (the Green Bay Packers bar on Tropicana), last time I was there a MONSTER mug/stein of PBR (actually on tap) was (I think) $3.50. We're talking close to 30 ounces here, equivalent to 2 beers elsewhere. I took a buddy in town from Seattle & all he talks about is going back there for PBR on tap next time he's here.

At Ellis Island (the dumpy locals casino with a lot of hidden gems), any of their microbrews will set you back between $2.00-$2.50 (I believe they're cheaper at the bar than in the restaurant). IPA, Stout, Amber, Hefeweizen. It's a HUGE tall glass (I think they used to have 22 oz glasses, now I believe they're down to 20 oz, but still seem awfully big.) Oh, should you decide to gamble, those beers will cost you whatever you choose to tip - they're comped! I'd rather have $$ go to the waitress for tip if they'll comp the beer/drink. You can sit around the main bar & if you're playing video poker or one of the machines I think they'll comp your beer - at least they used to, I haven't tried recently. If you happen to go there during a televised football game, the beers are only $1!

The Pioneer Saloon at Goodsprings. The "town" of Goodsprings, NV is about 50 miles south of Las Vegas. And it's worth the trip.

This is a complete dive bar -- and it has been for more than a century. This is a legit, wild-west era, bullet-holes-in-the-walls joint that is the world headquarters of the "[Anal sphincter] Club." The only way that could be more "dive bar" is if NRBQ was their regular band.

This is the place I bring most of my visiting friends -- because it's real-deal old west. They have an impressive beer selection for being so freakin' far out of the way. The prices are fair. They usually have live music. What's not to like?

can you get there by dirt road?

First, check out Ellis Island. It's a dumpy little locals casino just east of the strip, but there are a few hidden gems there. They have their own microbrewery & brew their own IPA, amber, stout & hefeweizen (I think they still make their own root beer as well.) They also have a surprisingly good restaurant with the best value steak dinner you'll find in town - $9.99 (price just went up) for a 10 oz filet cut sirloin, soup/salad, garlic butter green beans & choice of potato. Price drops to $7.99 if you play $5 thru a machine with players' card (gamble $5 on 99% payback video poker machine, get $2 discount - over time you'll average about a $1.98 discount if you know how to play, a no-brainer for me - tho some don't want to bother). Although I'm not big on thin-crust pizza, Metro Pizza's a decent option & they have one inside. Finally, their karaoke bar gets consistently good marks. I was just there tonight for the steak dinner and had a couple IPAs. They're remodeling part of the (small) casino, it looks like crap, but don't let looks deceive you - the good stuff is still there.

If you want to get a little more off the strip, go east on Tropicana to the Rum Runner lounge (1801 E Tropicana, basically Tropicana & Spencer). It's known for being a Packer bar (Green Bay Packers) & is a great little dive-y place with affordable beers & food (next door, but you can order in the bar). They host pool leagues there so they have quality pool tables. Darts too. I always play the shuffleboard game that uses the metal pucks, fun every time I go. BEFORE you go to Rum Runner, go to the Pinball Hall of Fame on the other side of the streetlight (short walk) at 1610 E Tropicana - it closes at (I think) 11 PM & it's unlike any other place you'll find. Imagine walking through an arcade with games from the 1960s thru somewhat recent games; my buddy from Chicago is a pinball freak and he was like a kid in a candy store there. Truly a unique experience in Las Vegas & I don't think it gets anough attention. GREAT way to kill a few hours & have a blast.

We go to Ellis Island a lot.

For sure the Double Down Saloon at 4640 Paradise Road where they serve the Bacon Martini and famous for their Ass Juice. This is a dive bar but all types and ages of people go there to enjoy the atmosphere and punk alternative music. A band called Franks and Beans play there quite often and they do punk versions of Sinatra and other "standards". I see on their site they call it "Rat Pack Rock and Roll". They've also got some pretty awesome DD tshirts.

Yes, it is still around. Owned by the same people who own Frankie's Tiki Room.

I took that off my "tour" list for first-time out of towners. Unless one knew the history and relates it orally, it's just a regular bar. They used to have cool photos on the walls, but the last time we were in there a month or so ago, there were just some old "hazardous" signs on the walls.

You may have already come and gone already.

I had a Las Vegas born and raised local invite me out for my first time and they gave a little tour of local spots on/near the Strip. One of the places we went to was already recommended in this thread called, Dino's. That's a dive bar with karaoke. The other place is called, Peppermill. I liked that place better. They said they had to take me there because it's a Las Vegas icon where all the locals go and their version of a local dive bar I guess. It's cool with the lights and mirrors inside. It's a restaurant and lounge. I liked the cozy lounge area best.
