I was looking on the NV DMV site, and it appears they expect you to get a temp paper permit good for 10-30 days to move the vehicle from point of purchase and for smog cert ect.

If I'm registering the vehicle like a day or two after purchase and skip that will they hassle me at all?

Two trips to the dmv for one vehicle is something I'd much rather avoid.

Obviously if I got pulled over with no tags it would be a problem, but I'm pretty sure a motivated seller could be convinced to have the smog done prior and either drive the vehicle over or complete the transaction in the dmv parking lot.

They won't hassle you but try not to drive it other than to get it smogged.

If you get pulled for no registration, which is rare here, it's like 150 bucks for the ticket. However, if you don't have insurance, it's like 1100 for the ticket. So, put insurance on it AT the seller's house before you ever intend to move the car.

I have posted the sting I saw at DMV several times. The paper plate costs $1. There's really no excuse for not getting one.

"I didn't feel like waiting in line" just smacks of entitlement to me.

I get off work at 2:30pm. By the time I get to the dmv it is after 3. Have you ever been to the dmv at 3? The line is out the door. I could sit there for 3 hours, and possibly not even get seen, or pay 150 bucks. Given my pay rate, my time is worth that much, I'd rather just pay the ticket, honestly.
I've gotten all my cars from a dealership, so it's not really a problem except when the dealership failed to provide me with a green slip for my i35. I got it smogged with no tag, and then paid someone to register it. 60 bucks on top of the registration sure beats 3 hours in the dmv.

When I saw the sting at the DMV, the drivers were telling the cop similar stories as their unregistered cars were being towed off -- so it's not just a $150 ticket.

I'm REALLY glad I had my paper plate that afternoon.

Lots of dmv service in town that will pick up and deliver your tags.

I'm definitely not advocating driving unregistered, but sometimes circumstance dictate that you do.
As long as you have insurance, you're not going to hurt anyone but yourself.
I do wish they would let you print off a temporary movement permit online, or at least at a kiosk.

In other states I have lived, if you bought a car off of someone, you could legally move it without a tag within 3 days of purchase as long as you had insurance. I like that.

I like that, too. Almost anything is better than our current system. But if an unregistered driver gets popped, it can be a lot more expensive than $150 -- the impound lot is never a fun place to be.

Will the seller remove their plates (they are supposed to, but some don't know that). If they leave it on, technically the vehicle is still registered until they return the plates and legally I believe you could still drive it.

If it doesn't have plates on it, I'd be a little more worried about getting pulled over.

The temporary movement permit system is ridiculous. You have to queue up and wait just like you're registering a car. I don't know why they can't give it out at the information desk where they give out the numbers (or online).

Okay, I know NV could be radically different. But here in Backeastland, when you buy a car, you get the insurance before you actually take possession (all you need is the VIN.) When you actually do the transaction with the seller, you give them the funds, and they sign over the title. You take the signed title to DMV, do their paperwork, pay them, and they give your a temporary registration and plates. You return to the seller, take off their plates put on your plates, and you're good to go. You get the permanent registration and title in the mail some time later.

How is it different out there?
