I love Albuquerque winters!! Lots of snow, some parts of the city vary.
And the beauty of 34 degree highs and 12 degree lows.
Anyway, I'm going to miss this winter, sadly.

My opinion?VERY overrated. Its just another city once you leave the strip. Its an area of 2,000,000 built for 1,000,000. Everything revolves around the casinos and they dictate how this town operates. I do like that its compact and that nothing is really far away but I don't like that the roads here are never fully complete and are always under construction. The school system here is a joke and our elected officials are smug and ineffective. Not to mention corrupt. I've been here my whole life and I liked it alot better when it was a smaller big town. Heck when the mob ran Vegas it was cool to live here! Now its coorporate, dirty, congested and the people here aren't the friendliest. And no sense of community whatsoever. I go to cities like Pittsburgh and see there is community pride and togetherness. Not in Vegas.

You would appear to have not lived anywhere else. It is sprawling...a city for 4 million with only two million in it. It has an exceptionally good road system...try Phoenix or LA sometime.
Its schools are comparable to the rest of the SW. And superior to Los Angeles.
I will invite you to one of the public meeting where this non-community hangs a developer who wants to change the zoning...very educational.
And at the moment the Clark County Commission has about as high a boy scout quotient as I have seen.

Thats cause the californians invaded.
And well lets not forget how Vegas was founded on, mostly casinos.
Thats what is happening to little towns in New Mexico.
Same with Albuquerque.
The leadership finally changed but over 50% of high school students dont graduate. What a joke.

I only think its overrated in the sense that people move to Vegas believing its some sort of utopia and that starting over in Vegas is easy. It is not. The city and atmosphere are right for some people and not right for others. For me it was right in the fact that IT businesses can flourish very quickly and that worked for me in starting my business. But it wasnt right for me in too many other ways, I missed the seasons (and yes snow), I prefer east coast (ie NY culture/attitude), I didnt like raising my small child there (yes parenting goes along ways but eventually the environment starts playing a larger role and I didnt want to raise him in a place were any sort of vice is easily accessible-more so than other cities of comparable size), and I dislike feeling like because I dont speak spanish and it makes me an outsider, and I dislike desert style insects and water bugs. Now said that if I was single, or had been raised on the west coast these issues prob wouldnt bother me. It works for some and some really like living there but we (the wife and I didnt)
I agree with the above poster that there is little civic pride, perhaps if the city had something like a sports team to rally behind that would change. Another thing the above poster said about the mob, I used to do alot of work for metro police officers and members of the entertainment industry and I heard (for different reasons) that they preferred Vegas was run or under control of the mafia

Just moved to LV
We love it here so far, moving from a remote island in AK I was worried about big city atmosphere but almost all the people I've talked to have been grand--drivers on freeways seem pretty law-abiding compared to what I remember in AZ 15 years ago when I was one of the primary law breakers... nastiest attitudes have been with school district office employees. The downtown strip is really pretty cool, I have to say needs to be seen, is it worth it to move here? No way to tell that by asking on a forum--if you communicate your likes and dislikes you may get a better idea if LV will be right. The best idea is to stay here for a couple weeks, there are good places with everything included for under 40$ (long distance, inet, utilities) a day Good luck

Thanks for dredging up this thread, I completely forgot I had posted anything... and after 3 months here, this place is awesome. Every week is better than the last. Of course, as I referenced in the last post, when you are from an island with more caribou than people, you're probably easy to please. But still...
As far as colleges and universities, I have done my share, and my impression is that the places here are your run of the mill diploma mills--pay your ticket, attend the ride, get your paper. No additional thinking required. Otherwise that will be extra.

Thank you for responding..Im new to this site, Im thinking of moving to Vegas, or anywhere outside of California for that matter. I've read alot of different post..I gotta say Im skeptical, alittle frightened to say the least..I do have a sixteen yr old, and I wouldnt want him caught up in that world, but can you really know what will be..I mean outside of my own parenting, their is a world of influence out there..I welcome the suggestions...I live in Palmdale, Ca..and Ive had it out here..I just need a Huge change..why Vegas, dont know but anywhere would be better than here..I hope.

It depends on what you what you want to study. UNLV does have the second best Hotel/Restaurant Management program in the country. The best one is at an Ivy League school; I forget which one at the moment. If I were in the program, I'd rather go for UNLV. It's a lot cheaper, the weather is better here, and we've got more places to intern here. Personally, I'd rather take the summer's heat than the winter's snows back there.
