Very intelligent sounding post.... not.
Listen folks - the botton line is that there is no right or wrong about Las Vegas being good or bad. It's all a matter of opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion. When someone posts a message wanting to know about a certain area or the city as a whole everyone is entitled to give their opinion. That's what the person is looking for, a variety of opinions so they can listen to them and form their own judgement. Nobody is right or wrong. We all look at the world (and Las Vegas) differently. We post what we feel and see. People don't have to go around trying to refute everything someone says about the city. Just post what you think and leave it at that.

Opinion is fine on matters of opinion. You can like or dislike whatever you like. Matters of fact are not subject to opinion. "I like GV better than Summerlin." Opinion...just fine. But then you add "because the schools are better." That is fact and is not OK. And no...you may not opine that GV is better...that is a matter of fact. You don't get to vote on facts.
You are most welcome to your opinion. However they are our facts...and there you must keep them straight.
You are also welcome to argue what the facts are...the crime statistics for instance are convoluted enough to prove almost anything. But that is not an opinion...it is an argument. You convince me...or I will convince you...or our audience will decide who is right or put a pox on both our intellects...

You are back to talking in circles as usual. We went over facts and even when I posted information about the actual facts (e.g., the Nevada school rankings) you still tried to sugar coat it. What you love to do is when someone says something negative about Las Vegas you point to another major city. You say "it's typical of a major city" or "other cities in the SW.." Please... on this board people are talking about Las Vegas. Not other cities. We've posted the facts but you close your eyes to them. You are typical of a realtor though - you take someone to see a house and they notice the carpeting is trash and they start saying it's trashed and you immediately say "but look at the nice crown molding" to take their mind off of it. The fact is that the floor is trashed but you want to refocus their attention and not admit to it. Used car salesmen are like that too.
For anyone that hasn't been able to tell yet, Olecapt is obsessed with me. He chases behind me all over the message boards trying to refute everything I say. His post above was just not necessary, he feels he must always say the opposite of everything I say. I say liking areas of Las Vegas is a matter of opinion and he can't even leave it at that...no, he has tear that apart. Sad...
Okay, you are back on my ignore list now... and that my dear is a FACT!!

Promises promises.
The Nevada school rankings deal with Nevada. They do not deal with Las Vegas. They are also misleading in that you end up comparing Las Vegas and Washoe County to the other States. That is as opposed to the other cities.
You are welcome to your opinion that Las Vegas is dreadful. I will also however put forth the fact that it is also better than most. Your dreadful and my better than most are compatible.
One has to decide...are you ranking Vegas? Or are you deciding whether to live in Vegas or Detroit? You apparently think that everyone is interested in your ranking of Las Vegas. I think they are interested in Las Vegas as opposed to Chicago or Detroit or Los Angeles or Phoenix or...Therefore I believe your insight is non-useful...it does not help a reader decide between Detroit and Las Vegas.
When I take someone to a house I point out that the carpet is trashed which is worth about $5,000 but that it does have nice crown moldings. You disagree?

I think the idea of Vegas is this... If you are from CA you got similar weather, better taxes and cheaper housing. If you come from the midwest the housing sucks but at least you are not freezing. If you are from NY, taxes, weather and housing are better. People are looking for a better place to live not necessarily the best place to live in the USA.

Montevista1 - I think you are right about what people think of it depending upon where they come from. I'm originally from the midwest and when my family would visit Vegas they laugh at the size yards (or lack of yards) that people get. And the house would be around $225k. In the midwest you get really big yards with your home. But someone from LA is probably happy with the size yard because it's an affordable house that doesn't cost a million dollars. Just depends on how you look at it, everyone sees something different... it's very subjective.
As for health care - I can't say that I ever found it to be more expensive, but that's just my experiences. Others may have found it to be moreso.

The first thing that came to mind was the indoor amusement park at Circus Circus. My nephew and niece loved it when they came to visit. Many hotels offer activities and attractions for kids.

Taking kids to Vegas isn't the most ideal situation of you and your spouse are both big gamblers or want to take in a lot of shows. If you're just looking for a beautiful place for a vacation that might include a little gambling, that's a different story. My MIL lives in Vegas (we did too from 94-99), and we go back to visit every 2 years or so (even that's too much IMO....lol), and while we usually stay off the strip to save $$, we do spend a lot of time there with the kids. Some of the attractions that we visit include the midway at the Excalibur, the lions at the MGM, M&M world, the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, the dolphins/animals at the Mirage, etc. When we want to gamble, we take turns watching the kids while the other wanders off for some gambling.
Its not ideal for heavy gamblers, but it works for us.

I think Las Vegas has gone strongly anti-kid the last 10 years. Really only NYNY makes any accomodation. Wynn, Bellagio, Paris, Venice have little if anything going for kids.
I think this is mostly good. There are lots of nice places to go with children. Vegas can be held as a place where you go without them.
