There are already indian casinos in Cali that are more convenient to their big cities than Vegas. AFAIK they haven't put a dent in the Cali based business in Vegas.

And, of course, the Cali poker rooms have been around for decades now.

Indian casinos aren't limited to the take percentages that Las Vegas casinos are. I visited one on a trip to Palm Springs a couple of years ago. The first thing that struck me was that all the games were at least a denomination above what I was used to seeing in LV casinos. I didn't see a single video poker machine less than 25 cents per credit, and slot machines that were penny slots on most Vegas casino floors (the multi-pay line muitl-credit type) were five cents per credit at the Indian casinos. Nobody was winning anything. If you just want to play, I suppose that they serve the purpose. If you want the whole experience and to actually have a fighting chance to at least break even, stay out of the Indian casinos.

They have less competition, so they price their gambling higher. That's the beauty of Vegas, with so many casinos in such a small area, they have to compete, one way or another.

I am sure the Californian politicians would be able to screw up even a business as profitable as gambling.
LOL, They'd have to eventually bring in some mobsters to clean it up and legitimize them!

This is true of most states because they look at it as another Cash cow to milk similar to their state lotteries. I live in NYS and they brought in the lottery with the selling point of it will go to the schools for education. Well many years later our school taxes keep going up because the state has cut funding. Where is the lottery money. The same with gambling which many states are trying to develop the money goes into a black hole and your Property ans school taxes keep going up and up. The lottery is just a poor mans tax.The odds are way off the chart to win and now you have like 42 states in on Powerball so your odds are something like 1 to 176 million. Indian casinos are all over the place some are run good but they offer lo payouts. The people who go to these will never go to LV. So back on subject politicians will screw up any gambling they put in place they can't even run their goverments never mind a Casino.

I totally agree. I am originally from New York and lived there when they created Off Track Betting (OTB). There was a similar claim that the money would go to education. Eventually OTB started losing money because the politicians created a huge bureaucracy which was political payoffs.

Wow. A thread that lasted longer than the amount of time that I lived in Vegas.

I love the really long, old threads where you can see what people were saying back before the bust vs. today. It's a fascinating little sociology snippet.

People used to talk about ample jobs, but skyrocketing housing costs. Now, it's quite the opposite.

I agree. I moved to Vegas 2 months before the kick off of this thread. I'm glad to have experienced Vegas for 5 1/2 years and I'll never say never about going back but it would probably be after I retire.
