As for this topic of whether or not Las Vegas is overrated or not seems like a trick question or a trap. If someone posts a criticizm about Las Vegas, they get a simple response, "if you don't like it, get out," or "your the problem with Las Vegas, so do us a favor and leave." So be careful what you say, honesty and opinions will get you in trouble with the forum crowds here. I don't understand it, but it's the way it is, low tolerance. Not always helpful to those who would like to hear all sides of the opinion spectrum. This post will likely get me some more negative reputation dings.
I have no problem with criticism of Las Vegas. It is a place well suited to criticism. Don't jump in claiming it is over run with crime. It ain't. Or that all the schools are crap...they are not.. Or that NLV is not suited for families...it is. Or that we have the world's worst drivers....we don't.

We do have a matched set of almost bare butts on the back of our taxis. We do feature a suggestive slogan for our city. We do appeal to the tourist with a deliberately tawdry image that probably exeeds the experience of the vast majority. We are organized to separate the tourist fron his money. If he gets laid it was simply a part of that goal.

Note that this forum was entirely dedicated to the assination of Las Vegas a year ago. At that point a number of us jumped in to bring a little reality to it. I was in fact recruited from another list for that purpose.

If you wish to come in and pee all over Vegas be prepared for a hostile response. If you don't like the way our roads are maintained you will likely get a chorus of agreement.

As to the 5000 per Richard Lee...local RE guru and general speaker of truth says that a statisitical group at UNLV tracks the number regularly and claims it still goes on month after month. That remark was in an RE industry panel discussion about a week ago.

I've only been a there a few times, and didn't spend all that much time on this strip. I drove around to many parts of the city, Henderson, Summerlin, Centennial, etc...
Like Ole Capt said "It's a city designed for tourists to have fun and spend money". What I really like about the city is you can live a normal life from house to work, have all the resturants you want, golf almost every day, hit the lake, the slopes (winter of course), and just generally have a normal life - without ever going to the Strip.
Over rated: NO. I can tell you this, I felt more comfortable driving around Las Vegas then I ever did New Orleans, LA, Norfolk, Miami, Atlanta, etc...

Overrated? No, Las Vegas is rated right where it belongs, at or near the bottom of every good list, and at or near the top of every bad list.

Boy have you got that right! There are some people that get their feathers really ruffled if you point out the negative things. They are tolerant to opinions just so long as they agree with theirs! It's nuts. They take people posting opinions from their own experiences way too personal. They are the type of people that if you say the sky is blue will take the opposite side and say it's orange! And they will even find "evidence" to support it even if that "proof" comes from their own Web site or one that is not credible.

You are right... ut oh, brace yourself, you will be told what a liar you are and how you don't know what you are talking about. Keep in mind that you have to take it with a grain of salt, these people have 23 hour access to liquor, gambling, etc. They no not what they do...

Tap...tap...tap... what's that sound? It's the sound of a couple of people trying desperately for evidence to proof it all wrong! LOL

You are blinding yourself to the fact that illegal immigrants are wreaking havoc on the country and particularly in Nevada, Arizona, California. They are costing American tax payers billions in money going to incarceration for their criminal activity, healthcare at hospitals they don't pay for, education they receive, and all the other public assistances they are getting. Wake up and smell the coffee, buddy. You might want to go to the illegal immigrant debate forum on this site. You could learn a thing or two about a thing or two!
