I'd say it's more human nature. While we all hear prostitution is the "worlds oldest profession", I'd be willing to bet that gambling is the worlds oldest entertainment. We like the thrill of the easy reward, the bigger the better. That's what keeps even those of us who know what a suckers bet it is to put $2 on a chance for a billion dollars (that's not even really a billion dollars).

As long as you're not spending the rent, food, or clothes money on it, nothing wrong with dreaming the dream. Life without dreams is a pretty barren place.

And one other thing that is often forgotten when discussing the throwing money away aspect of this whole thing: the money is supposed to go for education (in CA at least), so is it really "throwing money away"?

I think we should use a lottery system to choose 537 winners, comprised of 435 US Representatives, 100 US Senators, 1 US Vice-President and 1 US President.

Chosen at random, they probably would be more competent and less corrupt than our current batch.

In CA, it's gotten to the point where someone could buy up all the combinations, and still make money, if they're the only winner.

This would be an improvement.

Maybe Arizona this time? After all I have already seen beautiful downtown Baker. It's not just a lottery, it's an adventure!

I just drove out to CA today and saw the long line to get tickets at stateline. Don't do it.

it's not much better in AZ- we waited 1-1/2 hours. By the time we left the line was wrapped around outside all three places plus the wrap arounds inside.
