definitely was going on for the 3 years i was there....
not to say could have a minor offshoot here though, given our proximity to LA. as a reference, when i was in omaha there was a minor turf war between some LA based gangs (the turf basically due to a omaha being a stopover on I-80 between the coasts/or chicago or something)...gotta assume same could happen here

Being single in Las Vegas is really tough!!! That's something I regret about moving here is girls aren't as attractive here as they are in Connecticut where I'm from. Girls are much more respectable, modest, and contemporary back east than they are here in Vegas. Girls here have piercings in they're lips, tonges.
So to me that is something that is regrettable about moving to Vegas, hard place to find a wife.

It's good to see such a positive bunch of views.
My story...Born and Raised in New York, high tailed it out of there at 18...lived in Las Vegas for 14 years...watched it grow and hated it and hated it. Counted the days to get out. Finally got out, moved back 'home' and cannot believe how much I miss it. I truly got Vegas blood and cannot wait to move back home. 16 days and counting.
As it's 20 degrees, I cannot wait to feel that beautiful, hot 'oven' heat on my face this summer. See ya in 16 days!!!
P.S. - I do agree Jayshmay...I met my husband when I did live there on e-harmony.

Las Vegas does have a variety of things to do. I have a 3 year old daughter, and I love being able to take her to a new place or park everyday. I quit my job as an Office Manager in April, and have been able to experience the city a lot better over the last year. I sometimes take her to the Zoo, which is really not a zoo that you would be able to compare to any other town (sucks), but you know what? My daughter really doesn't care she just loves the animals.
I think the job market is not to great. People want so much experience for no money at all, so it is tough. I had been an office manager of a company for 8 years, I am only 28, and I feel I was discriminated because of my age. But I did the work. After I left the company I was at, I got a job making 12.00 an hour, sometimes for the same job I did before making $30.00 an hour.
The housing market has really affected a lot of jobs, and you really don't realize how many until you really looked at it. I worked for a Pest control company, and people just looked at me weird when I said that I lost a lot of money at my job due to the housing market. We had done pre-treats for the new home construction, and also termite Inspections for re-sales. I had made a percent off of what our production was. When the market took a turn for the worse, I lost about 2000.00-3000.00 a month. I love this town, and I hope that things get better for everyone. My husband and I started our own company, because it was not worth us working for other people, when we weren't making that much, and we could do it for our selves.

Paralegal jobs
To the lady who asked about Paralegal jobs: I've been here a year and have a paralegal degree and can't get a paralegal job! Never had this much trouble finding a job in my entire life. They all require Nevada experience but you can't get Nevada experience if nobody will hire you.
I have experience in other areas as well. Temp agencies low ball you claiming they don't want to place anyone who hasn't been here one year. I keep hearing you have to "pay your dues."
If you don't have a large nest egg then wait until you do because you will need it.

We just moved here a few months back with our kiddos (from Indiana)- ages 11,9 and 7. I absolutely love it here! I love the fresh air and the mountains. I love that you can see for miles and miles. I love the weather and the amount of activities that you can do.
What do I not like? I don't like what is happening in and around our childrens schools - it scares me to no end.
I really hate the way people drive here - it seems as if everyone is in a hurry to go nowhere. People drive like psycho's - it is nothing to see people driving 100+ down the interstate, weaving in and out of traffic. I wish drivers would wake up, slow down, and be more respectful of other drivers!
By the way, I live in Henderson and did my homework before moving here (as far as schools go). BUT, I am still worried about the school situation.
If I didn't have children - I would be 98% happy here!!

I appreciate your problem...but where do you think it is different? The most heinous school crime in recent memory took place in a school in rural amish PA...there is no place "safer". You can home school I suppose...but that works as well in Las Vegas as anywhere.

All these school shootings is disturbing, but its really nothing new. I am surprised that the schools here do not have metal detectors. I know the school district I use to work for in San Jose had them in place, and this was at middle schools and high schools. Did any of the school shootings here in Las Vegas actually happen inside a classroom? I think its just pretty much outside the campus right?

That's why the magnet schools are better...those heavy duty electro-magnets at the entrance are so strong that they basically pick the metal weapons out of those kids pockets.

My husband has family out here and they made a very convincing argument to get us to relocate. Our first few months we had a lot of culture shock and my children wanted to "go home". Now, if you ask them they say Las Vegas is their home. The summers are HOT but we are now approaching our 3rd one and really, I am not dreading it as much as I thought I would be. The fruit here is the best I have ever tasted, I think because it doesn't have to be shipped as far. Apples suck out here, but then, MI is apple orchard territory and I did grow up in an apple orchard. If anyone knows where I can get a nice crisp apple please let me know
I have found, in my personal experience, that most people who move here from the midwest area really do well here. I have found that most of the people who hate it here have come from California (just my experience). We recently went to San Diego and I have to admit, if I could afford to live there I probably would. It is absolutely beautiful. So, I can understand why moving here might be a bit of a let down.
The first time we went to Lake Mead when we moved here we were very disappointed. But, we were, of course, comparing it to the Great Lakes which is what we are used to. Nothing compares to the beauty of the mountains and how at any time of day they can be completely different colors.
We had 2 acres in MI, here we have a pool and that is the extent of our backyard. It was a little weird at first but with all the parks around (that we don't have to mow) we have quickly adjusted to going to the park.
All things considered, we are very happy with our decision to move to Las Vegas.

I am from Michigan also, i was disappointed with lake meade also ,but after being here for 4 years i have come to admire the lake as i admire lake michigan, regardless of what anyone thinks about las vegas, i love it and though i am proud to be from michigan i am also proud to call las vegas my home
