Regular corporate marketing truisms seldom apply to the NFL. Some of the League's most successful franchises are in small markets (Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Buffalo, Baltimore, KC, Nashville, New Orleans). San Diego and Jacksonville are the small-market teams that are not successful in terms of fan bases. Likely both will be sold eventually. The Rams are a different case altogether. Besides that, the Raiders are not the only football team currently in the Bay Area and they have the worst stadium in the NFL. The franchise would benefit from getting out of town no matter where they go. Oakland is the poor sister of San Francisco and the Raiders are not getting a new stadium if they were to stay there.

That was true in Phoenix for years, too. Still is to some extent. Money spends the same no matter where it comes from. The games that sell out the fastest in AZ are Packers, Vikings, Bears, Lions, Cowboys. The Cards usually play the Steelers in the pre-season, for revenue, I'm sure. And the revenue from football tourism is huge. The fans don't visit for 24 hours. It's business for airlines, hotels, restaurants, and, yes, casinos (Phoenix has quite a few).

Modern stadia aren't built merely to have a usable FIELD. They are designed with many other rentable spaces that are a regular revenue stream. I can offer you detailed info from Pittsburgh, as I lived there for many years. Pittsburgh's Heinz Field acts as a welcome annex to the successful Pittsburgh Convention Center, which is close by. Here is a list of the in-stadium facilities that are rented for non-NFL activities:
Event Space & Pricing - Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA

As you can see, these are attractive spaces for trade shows, corporate meetings and events, galas, fundraisers, weddings and other private parties (I love the photo of the wedding set up with a Terrible Towel draped over every dinner guest's chair!) Open-to-the public events held in the past year include the annual Easter event featuring brunch and a kids' egg roll on the field, a March Madness Smoker, and the Steelers Annual Ladies Night Out. I understand it's not as if your casinos don't offer similar spaces for weddings and galas, but your stadium could be designed to act additional convention space.

As for using the field for events other than the Steelers and the Pitt Panthers (who play all their home games there), Heinz Field is used for all WPIAL championship football games, the Steelers Youth Football Clinic, the Steelers Annual 5K Race to raise money for a scholarship fund. There are about five big concerts per year. Upcoming in 2016 are Beyonce, Kenny Chesney, and Guns 'n Roses. The Penguins hosted one of the NHL's outdoor January hockey matches at Heinz Field. The City of Pittsburgh rents the field for a variety of training programs.

Since a stadium in Las Vegas would be covered, that opens the stadium up to far more marketing opportunities than Pittsburgh could ever have. A future Super Bowl, of course, college bowl games, and the NCAA football championship games. The NCAA even plays its BASKETBALL championship series in a domed football stadium ($$$). I don't think there's much interest in rodeos in Pittsburgh but I imagine that would be popular in LV. The Cardinals stadium in Glendale, AZ, has rodeos, several car events each winter, and many soccer games.

Thriving cities have concert venues of ALL sizes if they want to attract the wealth of entertainment opportunities out there. Pittsburgh has the Consol Energy Arena (home of the NHL Penguins), but they still market Heinz Field for concerts. Beyonce chose Heinz Field over Consol for her upcoming tour. As someone else has already mentioned, a stadium in LV will be domed. Flight path isn't an issue.
Very thorough response. Thank you.

TLDR;

If the raiders come here, they better sign here for a long time. 25+ years. I'm tired of them moving to LA, then out of LA then preventing everyone else from moving there. Al Davis was a total (__O__) Ahole and I don't think the apple falls far from the tree. Also, if the stadium is being shared with UNLV, then some taxpayer funding maybe acceptable with the long term contract with the Raiders to stay in the city. If they don't sign such, forget them. Let them rot in Oakland for being so rotten. They are the worst of the NFL owners who only care about free stadium to pit one city vs another. I was in Seattle when they blew up one stadium which they were still paying for to build and pay for another one. ARE YOU EFFING SERIOUS!! Well that's NFL owners pitting cities to get what they want. I have a feeling they might move here but mostly they want to force Oakland city council to approve another new stadium. I'm sure they're arguing that SF 49 got a new stadium so should Oakland (to play on city of Oakland's inferiority complex with SF).

Let's build better schools before giving millionaires free stadiums people.

But the Transportation Authority is also planning on taxing the tourists for the light rail train from the Airport to Downtown. You can't do both!

Raiders make pitch for Las Vegas stadium - San Jose Mercury News

Btw, will they be the Las Vegas Raiders or the Nevada Raiders?

Excerpt from Peter King of MMQB:

“We’re not using Las Vegas as a bargaining chip. This is real … It’s going to be a great marriage.”
—Oakland owner Mark Davis during an appearance in Las Vegas on Thursday, pledging to put $500 million into a proposed $1.4-billion stadium project if his move to Nevada becomes reality.

One day, you might look back on April 28, 2016, as the day one of the football stories of the year—or any year—got buried by the NFL draft. The owner of the Raiders, pledging everlasting love for Las Vegas.

I've always liked the Raiders since at least junior high.

Now that I've had a couple days to mull this over the Las Vegas Raiders does have a nice ring to it.

It also seem like a natural fit to me.

Raiders aren't really putting up $500m. It is really just a loan. They want a tax district to get their investment back that would ding the already high tax on hotels and rental cars. Same with the other $150m that Sands seems to be behind. Public would get none of that tax based on the current proposal.

The stadium would be 100% public funded in the end but the private investors would get all of the revenues. Sisolak got that admission out of them at the meeting Thursday. I doubt too many legislators are looking at that and thinking it is a remotely feasible plan.
