We are relocating to the area. I will be working near the Henderson Executive Airport. Housing seems like it high priced and crowded. We currently live in very rural Central Florida. I've bee looking on line for houses and Pahrump has the kind of homes we would like but the commute to Henderson has us concerned. Currently I commute 45 minutes in the morning and an hour or more on I 4 bumper to bumper traffic at night. I don't mind the drive but the bumper to bumper stop and go traffic is miserable.
What am I looking at for a commute from the Pahrump area to the Henderson Airport?

Thanks.

According to Google maps, that is 67 miles one way, 1 hour and 12 minutes. That would be a killer, IMO. I know I wouldn't want to spend close to 3 hours a day in my car. Add in the cost of gas and wear and tear on your car, UGH. That's 675 miles a week in driving, 2700 miles a month, just over 32,000 miles a year. At that rate you could theoretically need an oil change almost once a month. (if you follow the 3000 mile rule).

I knew someone that drove 50 miles one way to work. At first he thought it was no big deal, but after just a few months, it started to get to him, and it really took a toll on his car and marriage, believe it or not, because he had to leave so early in the morning and he got home late.

My dad had a 180 mile round trip to work. Did it 5 days a week for years.

That is a waste of life, IMO. That's about 6 hours a day DRIVING. No way.

Well, it's looking like I have a choice of a long commute, or spend $100,000 (and up) more for a house on a smaller lot in the city. I'm not much of a city boy.

Agreed. OP might want to look at the Lone Mountain area. It's rural in parts, but close to the 215.

Boulder City might be an option as well. But that one means coughing up some $$$$

What's the price difference on a house? Granted you'll get a lot more land in Pahrump. I know people who do that commute daily. As long as you're not during peak hours, it should be pretty smooth. During rush hour, Blue Diamond gets busy, as does the 215. If you need to commute during rush hour it'd be a no-go for me since that could easily add 30-45 minutes on top of a 75-90 minute drive.

It would make a difference where you live in Pahrump. There are some nice communities on the east side near the winery. Those will be the closest to Vegas and could make a 10-15 minute difference in your commute. I assume they are priced a hair higher.

Many people in other states (LA, NYC, DC, etc.) commute an hour plus each way.

Years ago I considered living in Pahrump and commuting into Vegas, but ultimately decided against it. Gas is reasonably priced now but if it becomes $4 per gallon again, how much are you really saving? Also what is your time worth? Depends on your own priorities. But if you want to live on 2.5 acres then yeah that's probably the only place it is remotely affordable. If you can settle for 1/2 acre in Vegas with a 2000sf home, you can find something for 300-375k.

If I go by my pay scale, driving 1 hour each way 5 days a week costs me over 20,000 dollars a year plus gas and wear and tear.

Could Sandy Valley be an option at about 50 miles from Vegas?

I only have to drive 25 miles one way and find that to be a killer when all you do is sit in traffic. Smooth sailing isn't bad, but that rarely happens. Driving 3 hours a day, every day, would be unbearable, but I know people that do it.

I would think there are still some rural or semi-rural areas left on the east side of Henderson that are affordable. They're probably more money than Pahrump, but the trade-off would be worth it.
