Until very recently, Tucson had a minor league baseball team called the Sidewinders. Their logo was unpleasantly ugly — a snake in the shape of an S (and I don't even dislike snakes).

I like the name Aces. It's not just a word related to gambling. It's a positive word, suggesting the letter A, or the best grade. Pros are referred to as "aces" in many professions. "He's an ace." That's a common expression and it's very complimentary. Simple, easy to spell, not associated with insects or snakes that some people fear. I think Aces would be popular on merchandise, and isn't that half the point of choosing a name people like? I can see tourists taking home shirts that say "Las Vegas Aces" even if they aren't hockey fans.

I was told that the owner wanted Black Knights because he went to West Point. Their athletic teams are known by the long name the Army West Point Black Knights. But their uniforms do have an A on them for Army, so he would be mimicking that by using A for Aces.

It really depends on whether or not the league allows that name. You can say all day long it has meanings other than gambling, but unless the league buys it, it's probably going to be a no go. It's too bad they can't just reference gambling. I think there would be a lot of love for an Ace of spades logo.

I like the Scorpions name but just don't see any parents putting pictures of scorpions all over their kids rooms. I'm an adult and I would probably freak out all sleepy and opening my eyes and seeing some huge scorpion images in my room. Of course, promotional giveaway nights could be fun. First 1000 people get a UV Flashlight or a bag of Diatomaceous Earth.

Aces as in Airmen Committed to Excellence? I wonder if the logo would be fighter jets or just wings.

For the rattlers/sidewinders I saw on the list of names they have Snake Eyes. I guess that has to do with the gambling reference. They could just go with Las Vegas Snakes and then the logo is a generic green snake head hissing with diamond eyes.

I used to have huge black scorpions on my floor mats in my car. I didn't pick them. It came with the car. I thought it was cool in a heavy metal rock star kind of way so I left them.

I don't know. The Red Rocks are really growing on me. It feels like a strong solid name. Majestic beauty even of the desert southwest. Earthy, natural but tough. I can hear the announcer now, "The Las Vegas Reeeeed Rooooooocks!" Then they play Queen's "We Will Rock You," as they skate around the ice and get the crowd revved up. It's inspiring natural strength and nothing controversial about it really unless you picture a bunch of boulders dripping in blood. That would give Red Rocks a whole different meaning. Plus the alliteration rolls off the tongue.

How would they be terrible? I mean Idaho is the Steelheads and that's just a fish. They also use the symbol of nature with mountains and trees. Red Rocks are all over the desert southwest and some arches are as old as time and inspiring fortitude. Rocks are also associated with being heavy, strong, crushing. Then there is Queen's "We Will Rock You" song to go with it that always works up a crowd. Who doesn't love that? They have a whole hotel and casino resort named that as well here.

no one is going to want to buy a jersey or t shirt with rocks on them. The mascot would be a rock, that should say enough.

Your last sentence should let you know why it won't happen.

I don't follow about Red Rock Hotel and Casino. There are lots of things in town with the Red Rock name and they're building their practice rink on the property right next to there.

I also disagree on buying the merchandise. If people are buying a simple graphic of the mountain and trees jerseys for the Idaho Steelheads they'll buy the Nevada Red Rock jerseys no doubt.

You just have to be creative with it and see the vision.

Have you ever seen a rock slide or a boulder come down a mountain? It crushes an entire SUV or bigger and blocks the road taking days to remove. These things are no joke.

Also look at Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Why do you think he picked that nickname?

Going off that guy actually inspires me for a mascot. They could even make up some half Dwayne The Rock Johnson/Michelin Tires looking hockey player cartoon character version that is made up of entirely red rocks.

Then have the animated graphic of the fierce mascot crushing the opposition, or the entire animated red rock hockey team sliding down a mountain and crushing them and blocking the opponents way.

There is loads of creative marketing material to work with here. I've got several more ideas.

1) To start they could have red jerseys. Red Rock graphics with mascot man "The Rock" hockey player in the front. However, they don't even need a rock hockey player mascot really. Just double hockey sticks in front of Red Rocks would do for most. What harsher climate to endure than the desert southwest?

2) Speaking of H-E-double-hockey-sticks... Their mascot could be death even with death valley. They could do a Skull Rock motif over Red Rocks. Like a skull carved into red rocks as their symbol for their Red Rocks team. Then a crossing double hockey sticks over that like a Jolly Roger. Skulls rock!

3) Merging the two ideas together they could do a hockey mask or a row of hockey masks in the face of the Red Rocks graphic like Mt. Rushmore but of course they'd make it cooler looking with their own more realistic version of fierce determined hockey players. People travel from all over to see this monument.

https://www.google.com/search?q=hock...HL+hockey+mask

4) Looking at various red rock landscapes in the region they could have Hockey players or the Hockey team carved out of Red Rock and spaced out over a beautiful desert landscape like huge giant mountains. A mountain of a man made of red rock like a sculpture.

Sort of reminds me of the King's Gate in Lord of the Rings except hockey players version.

Spaced out like this.

But over beautiful landscape like this.

They could sell little stone carvings of hockey players made out of red rock, or plastic toy versions that look like red rock hockey players on the t-shirts.

I guess I like the "Nevada Red Rocks" for the hockey team because I can see the vision of it and I get creative with it and feel inspired by that.
