And it beats the hell out of Tonopah...hell Beatty NV beats the hell out of Tonopah.
The only reason I can think of to go to Tonopah would be to visit Gabbs. One has never really been to the armpit of NV until you have done Gabbs.
And it is kind of cute in a forelorn, ugly, unlovable way.

Another in-town suggestion would be to visit the Atomic Testing Museum, 755 E. Flamingo. It's on East Flamingo, off Swenson, near UNLV. This is one of the coolest museums I have ever seen, and if you are looking for something Las Vegas, then this is a must. They have spared no expense, and there are plenty of exhibits, videos, and some amazing props. You can breeze through it, or easily get lost and spend an entire day there. It is a wealth of nuclear history, including some great Cold War and Test Site history. This place doesn't get the attention it deserves. It would make a nice addition to the day when you visit the pinball museum.
If anyone other locals or visitors haven't been there yet, you have to go. You won't be disappointed.

And if you really want to see a piece of test site history the security guy who stood at the base of the tower when the scientist climbed it to see why why the bomb did not go off lives just up from Ack3.
Would that not have been a few minutes of sphincter tightening.

You should only do Gabbs at "Tarantula Migration time" [twice a year]

If you really want to see Test Site history take a tour of the actual test site. It's pretty remarkable. I did it once and plan to go again. The tours are once a month. A link to the schedule is on this page:

As luck would have it...I'll be in LV for the March tour! (but now I'll have to make a choice between Utah (Zion) or the Test Site Tour.)

You won't make the March tour. They want six weeks and pretty much won't give on the subject. You can try but this is a classical security operation. I don't think they are afraid of Al Qaida...more greenpeace pulling a banner across one of the old sites.

On the subject of Nuclear Vegas, there's always Atomic Liquor on E. Fremont, Vegas' oldest tavern. Folks used to watch the explosions off in the distance during happy hour.

amazing....I'm getting fascinated here. The atomic museum is now a must see for me. Do they have old pics at the tavern? Might stop over there afterwards for a drink.
