Elon Musk says he can put a solar tile roof on your house for the same cost as a traditional roof. That's before energy production savings and tax rebates.

Damn! What will the energy companies do to stop it?

I have the feeling upcoming improvements in solar systems will have the people who signed 20 yr contracts on the current technology in just a few years.

According to an article on the Bloomburg Report, such roofs are promising but will remain considerably more costly than conventional roofs for some time, which is typical for new developments and inventions. But they seem to last quite a long time, and the cost would be off-set by the savings in electricity.

I do think this is an extremely creative idea which is deserving of praise and support.

Stop what? There is nothing to stop. Has Musk ever sold anything without a federal subsidy? Tesla / Solar City will quickly disappear when the subsidies end.

In twenty years, the situation will be the same. At some point you have to pick your moment and jump.

And do you think they people who paid cash up front will be any happier?

Something like this should be code in a desert city, but of course the power companies will block that with all their might. All it needs is a battery system to go with it and a home could go grid free.

Uh, yeah, as long as by "traditional" roof you mean a terra cotta / slate roof, and not a concrete tile roof. The solar tiles are estimated to cost waaaay more than your standard roof.

I have watched the video and he says it's cheaper than a regular roof IF you take the energy savings into account. That leaves it wide open! But it's also a brand new product. It will be improved and the cost will go down in time.

I want someone to come up with a 48V DC air conditioner that can be used in addition your regular AC. I am converting my pool pump to solar this winter. It's an easy project I can do myself. It will run when the sun shines!
