I am looking to move to vegas, but I wanted to know a little bit more about the crime in Providence vs Summerlin. I think Summerlin is the nicer area, with probably less crime, but is Providence similar?

I know anywhere near north las vegas seems to be bad, but Providence seems to be far more west, directly above Summerlin.

How's the community, crime, food, etc, in Providence?

Thanks!

What is this Providence you speak of?

I had to look it up. I see it's the newer master planned community in the NW. I do recall reading that's where all the scorpions were booming this past summer with the new developments.

Oh stop Merry Lee.

Scorpions go where new plants from AZ are located. And are very rare. I can find you lots of scorpions in Summerlin. In fact the only home sale I ever lost to scorpions was in Summerlin.

You can't compare Providence to Summerlin. About 5 or 10% of the size. But it is newer than most of Summerlin and cheaper. Though the actual dwelling are mostly nicer.

The crime in the two will not be different. What you will see is that Summerlin has more commercial and therefore more crime. Providence is in the end of civilization and will be very low in crime. It alao backs to mostly BLM and such and will not see a lot more growth.

For the young and starting out but not poor..Providence. For the more mature with kids grown or a good bit of money...Summerlin. For those with lots of money...Summerlin .

I visited a friend that lives in Providence recently. It was obvious the residents are young and dog owners. I have never seen so many dogs in neighborhoods. I asked what the average age was in the homes. It is 29. The neighborhoods seem veryclean, with some beautiful valley views and mountains. The homes are so close together, but that's all over LV. I noticed most residents park on the street, as the garage is used for storage. Home construction seems flimsy to me, on the home I visited. Though that seems on many new homes now days.

There isn't anything for stores in that area. I did see a sign for a shopping center to be built in the area. There are lots of homes going up. I guess developers want every inch, of the area paved over with homes and stores.

I think for a young person who can afford a home. Providence would be a decent purchase. I felt safe there and was walking the sidewalks after dark. I saw many other out there walking their dogs. I personally would not want to live there. I'm older and would feel very out of place in Providence.

Summerlin hands down if you can afford it. Providence is master plan that failed to live up to its expectations due mainly to the lower price point of most homes; the not so hot master plan aesthetics. Frankly, I view it as an extension of North Las Vegas in many ways. The shopping and dining is awful unless you like Walmart or eating at chain restaurants - Olive Garden anyone? That is high end dining in that area. The advantages of Providence is the proximity to Creech and Nellis. For those considering moving to Providence, I would warn anyone who wants to shop at the Smith's shopping center on Durango @ Elkhorn. The area nearby has gone to pot with a lot of petty crime. I would not be caught in that parking lot after sunset.

Just south of Providence in the Lone Mountain rural estate preservation zone where I previously lived; both Ann Road and Lone Mountain are due to be widened extensively starting spring 2017. It looks as if it will be at least four lanes with center turn lane between CC-215 and Hwy 95.

At least in my part of Summerlin South, the homes are not lined up like Army barracks and have full mountain views. The shopping and dining options are much better with the likes of Trader Joe's, Sprouts, both on Sahara and Whole Foods on Charleston. While Sprouts and Whole Foods are both east of Summerlin, you get the Summerlin Crowds. In Providence, you get the large pick up trucks flying large American flag flying crowd shopping at Smith's or Albertson's. Quality supermarkets are not in the cards in the NW area of town.

I live just east of the Providence area, near Hualapai and Grand Teton. I love this area. Very little traffic as compared to Summerlin and all those old drivers. I am 73 years young and enjoy being in a younger neighborhood.
They are in process of building a new complex called Skye Canyon just north of Grand Teton - west of rt 95 of 10000 homes.
My little complex of Grand Teton village is small and HOA is only $34/month.
You have to not be afraid of driving 25 miles as most people in Las Vegas are. I lived in VT for many years where it was nothing to drive 15-25 miles for a cup of coffee. I prefer to be in the "boondocks".
They are in the process of locating a Trader Joe's at Centennial and Ann where Fresh and Easy used to be. Also Sprouts is building store at Farm and Durango. Smith's is supposed to be building HUGE store in Skye Canyon area to open in 2017.

Another thing about this area is everything is new. Close to beltway 215 and rt 95. 10 minutes to Centennial Library and YMCA. 3.5 miles to Santa fe Casino.
Just saying it is a great area.

You guys have it backwards for scorpions

They flourish in existing / more established areas

Why? Food, that's why

Newer areas have far people, far less plants so far less bugs, so infestations are far less frequent

Doesn't mean newer areas can't or won't have infestations but older areas are more likely

Providence is far away from everything, which is a pro or con depending on what you want

"Far" count = 63

Yes that's right the edge of NW. The friend I visited is about 2 blocks, from the end of home construction. However across the street is a sign, for another housing development and a shopping center. I can't think of the name of the street where this is.
