Downtown, a nice restaurant will validate the parking. Do you know if that happens at a Strip property? Downtown resorts also validate parking for a show - I wonder if that happens on the Strip.

Bad move, tourists are here only for a few days, locals are here 24/7/365 and yes locals do visit the bars, restaurants and locals gamble on the Strip.

And all of us think free parking is our birthright. It's a peculiarity amongst long time locals.

Actually, I think it is a big deal (even for tourists). And no, it's not just the parking fee on its own. But rather, it's the nickel and diming I think will cause problems. Anyone wishing to stay at the Cosmopolitan now has to pay a resort fee and parking. That equates to approximately $50 before you even look at your room charge and taxes (and I believe those are charged for the add ons). It really doesn't matter what other cities do, Vegas has been known for years to have discounted rooms which were subsidized by gambling. I know people like to make the argument that it's more about conventions now then gambling, but not all of those Convention goers are playing at the tables. At some point I do think it will impact their bottom line. At some point, we will have another recession. Sounds like a perfect time to revisit this conversation.

I wouldn't either. I also wouldn't want them scanning my local ID. Who knows what they do with that information!

It will be interesting to see how expensive parking becomes.

Resort fees started out low and are now $30.

It was frustrating not finding free parking downtown Saturday afternoon. Even El Cortez was charging $10.

Downtown is different, I kind of give them a pass. The whole area is smaller than the strip and the space for parking at the various properties is limited. I can understand why they charge, because if they didn't, they would have no spots left for guest. And guests park free, unlike the strip.

Strip properties have gone that way out of greed, not necessity.

The casinos are too afraid to **** people off and talk about this publicly, but word is all of those who are charging are seeing higher revenues from it than they expected. As one person pointed out to me, if someone spends $20 for food, about $3-5 of that will be casino profit after paying for food and staffing. If the person spends $20 on parking, its considered $20 of profit since the lots have long been paid for (except the new one MGM built) and the staffing to maintain them has only minimally changed.

So for those who say why charge me when I am coming to spend money at your property, well yes you are but the casinos also think about how much you contribute to their bottom line.

If you gamble in pretty much any form in a casino, you have a players card. You want one, because that's how you get comps. To get a players card, you have to let them scan your ID. And you use your players card when you play (see above.) So for many, if not most of the people in the casino, they already know who you are, and are tracking you.
