What you save on Rent you will lose big time on car insurance and health insurance if you are moving from California...

Nevada Auto Insurance is about 15% more tha CA and the national average (2004 numbers)

Western states are generally the cheapest region in health care. Neither Nevada or CA are in the top ten...which are all eastern states.

Housing costs are half that of CA. Rentals are around 50% less than So. Cal.

Income taxes are of course in favor of Nevada.

Whatever you believe you will always make out economically moving from CA to Nevada. There are places in the Midwest and south less expensive than Nevada. Other than that it is a gain or breakeven to move to Nevada.

Crime is not particularly high in Las Vegas. It is about 28th of the 50 larger metros. Middle of the Pack. If you want to live in a metro area with a third less crime than Las Vegas you have the choice of suburban Long Island, suburban Washington, suburban Atlanta or Honolulu. That is it. If you want less crime than Henderson you have a county in Viriginia and a suburab of NYC. That's it.

Get your head straight. The doomsayers will jump all over Vegas with derogatory garbage...check around...they do the same for Phoenix and Tucson and Los Angeles and San Diego ....and...wherever. These are simply unhappy people unable to make peace with their own shortcomings who make war on where they live or used to live or visited once or heard about.

It is really dumb but inherent in the web.

Folks just don't get it, this is a city thats ALIVE.....24/7...if crime is higher its because opportunity is much greater than the 99.99% of cities in the world, the statistics don't hold up to the nearly unique situation of Las Vegas.

I have yet to see a crime and my neighborhood is the friendliest I have EVER lived in...its in the southwest area.

The city growth is slowing with the housing bubble so housing costs have leveled off and the specualtors are running for the exits and headed east and north where the easy money can still be had.

The cities infrastructure is great, it is very easy to get around the town, even the bad days are nothing compared to similar sized towns.
Setting up a household is painless and easy because the city is very used to newbies arriving.

My garbage is collected twice a week....I have never ever had that happen on planet earth before.

The good things about Las Vegas far out weigh the bad, the biggest issue for the city now, as with many citys, is maintaining quality health care, ...as for nurses....talk about under appreciated and under paid.....lemme stop here before I get on a my soapbox about this national crisis.

Take a shot shot at Vegas the odds are good you will like it.

Just to clear up a misconception... people like to say that it's a 24 hour town and you can do anything there 24 hours a day. That's not true. You can only do casino activities 24 hours a day (gamble, go to srip clubs, restaurants in casinos, etc.). If you are around the strip it's 24 hours. Beyond the strip it's about as 24 hour as any other city. You may have a Walmart or Walgreens open but that's about it. So while people say you can do anythning there 24 hours it's not true. You are limited to what you can do in the middle of the night. It's not like you can go buy a car, go inside the bank, get a haircut, have Christmas photos taken, etc. all in the middle of the night. You can't. What it boils down to is that in the middle of the night you can still gamble, drink and get something to eat.

You can go grocery shopping 24/7 too. That is good for some people that work night shifts.

But doesn't just about every metropolitan area have grocery stores that are open 24/7? ...everyone that I've been to have.

Redwings has a good point ...I've never thought of it like that when somebody mentions it's a 24 hour city; good point.

To some degree the 24 hour bit was always a put on. But you can get pharmacy 24 hours...a hard thing elsewhere...there is one 24 hour pharmacy as I remember in Los Angeles. Twenty four hour cleaners are common...a local thing I have not seen elsewhere. And 24 hour gas stations and convenience stores are much more available than elsewhere. And a number of the fast food places serve all night in their drive thru.

The pubs actually have a second run in the wee hours when the Strip workers get off. That is a real 24 hour thing.

So it has some reality to it. Though most of us are in bed at a reasonable hour in Vegas just like the other places.

More Catholics than Mormons in Vegas if I remember correctly. The automobile sales are a secular deal. I think the major car companies agreed to it and used statute for enforcement. Other than that I don't think there are any blue laws.
