After the storm on the 31st, I find myself in the unenviable position of needing a new roof. Insurance will pay part of it, the adjuster came out today. But due to the deductible and the fact that I don't want dark shingles on my house because of the energy factor, I just have to replace it. We also learned the AC was leaking and caused some damage too. Looks like one section of the roof decking will have to be replaced too. The insurance adjuster found the damage when he went up in the attic.

Does anyone know a decent contractor who charges fairly and does a good job?

I have been poking around and it looks like there is a tax credit($500) for reroofing with energy star shingles. Supposedly they reflect the sunlight and make your roof much cooler. Has anyone used these and do they make a difference?

Thanks everyone!

What material, fiberglass shingles or cement tile?

I think it's asphalt shingles now.

How're they going to hold up in the Vegas heat? I thought that's why everything out there is concrete (not clay, right?) tile.

If you're going to the time and expense of replacing the roof, I wouldn't use asphalt. That may be the least expensive, but it is also the least durable.

If I had to replace a roof now I would look very hard at this option.

Are those even on the market yet? Even if they are, I don't think I'd be an early adopter. I'd want to see how they hold up for a while first.

Not available until later this year, if we're lucky. Production hasn't even begun.

As for the cost, these will certainly cost more than a conventional roof and also (initially) more than a roof made with finer materials.... I'm guessing they are making up some net present value numbers based off future electric bill savings

EDIT. Numbers I found online estimate between $70,000 and $100,000 for a Tesla on your roof vs a standard asphalt roof replacement cost between $8,000 and $16,000

Those pictures do look nice, especially the French Slate, and I hope they are cheaper than what I'm guessing

If the energy shingles work as well as clouds then I would seriously look into those. Every time it's cloudy, my house doesn't heat up anywhere near as much, the clouds act as a radiant barrier and do a wonderful job blocking heat. Thank you clouds.

Not available, darn it. That was my very first thought. First they have just now gone into production and the only company offering them is Solar City. And according to them, they will not be selling here till the legislative climate changes and is more favorable towards renewable energy.

When Elon Musk made those shocking statements about the roofs being cheap, you have to remember that's a bejillionaire talking. Cheap compared to what? He was probably talking about hand cut slate imported from France. I read that's the roofing material on HIS house!

But yes, this is what I would have wanted. Not likely I could afford it though!
