This is NOT a wise career move . Las Vegas will chew you up and spit you out. Stay where you're at.

Ok its time people --- you old people are unbeleivable... 27 years ago Vegas was a dump. I crappy little smoky gambling dump with crappy dingy garbage....and mob run piece of crap useless wasteland of gambling. In the 70s, Vegas almost dried up.

Now, it is an awesome hip young metropolis that has a more diversified economy, with so much to do it is overwhelming. You can shop until you drop at upscale shopping that will blow your mind, go to places like The District and Town Center, new places that are like cities within a city, you have mixed urban developments all over with lofts, new high-rises going up all over the place... it is like a new Manhattan. And the restaurants? Oh - I can't even begin. You can get every kind of food and wine IN THE WORLD - in Las Vegas. What a change in the last 15 years. And you have adult entertainment at your fingertips, and 24 / 7 if you want that. The clubs are unbelievable --- nightclubs that will blow your mind. Vegas is the #1 hotspot in the USA for clubs and other venues. You have museums and art galleries, and other fine culture as well. what a great place, something for everyone.

You have beautiful gated communities in the suburbs by the mountains, like Red Rock Canyon, with walking trails, parks, and it is very nice settings. Traffic is much better than LA.. no comparison. Vegas metro area is still small, only around 2 million people. It the #1 travel destination in the USA with over 3 million tourists coming EVERY MONTH! It is a great place...

Never listen to these old people who have lived here 20+ years, at least the ones who complain about Vegas, because they are just that, a bunch of old bitter people who can't handle change in the new world, and are pissed off because they are no longer young and patient enough to fit into the new scene. They are just envious, old, and and lost in the past.

Uh oh - im sure I'm gonna get some flack on this one. Oh well --- send these people back to Arkansas or wherever they came from, so they can live as they wish, and tell them to stop posting crap on this site about great cities!! This guy is a complacent moron.... uh oh.... bring it on!!!!!

Well as I understood from your post this is a rushed not thought out idea to move to Vegas and become a bartender/gambler. First of all you will not make any money gambling Unless you are that one in a million that actually gets lucky and wins big. But don't bet on that. Second of all don't think that just because you are moving to Vegas you will be rich and get an awesome job and live like a high roller. That's what everyone thinks but when they arrive the cold hard truth hits them. You will most likely start out from the lowest position and if you work hard you will be rewarded for that.

So if bartending is really what you want to do and you have a passion for that, then start researching about it. Since you think that a bartending school is an actual school then you haven't done your research Start working at a local bar where you live right now. Save up a good amount of money, so if it doesn't work out for you in Vegas you have some fallback money. Maybe after a few weeks you will decide it's not for you.

But if you do like it, and you got a well thought out plan then I'm sure Vegas is a great place to be a bartender. Well anyway good luck to you, and don't forget that Vegas is built on losers

Default advice from an actual bartender...

Ok, well, I'm not a bartender in Vegas, but I have been a bartender for the past several years.

Ok, to the OP - dude, whomever you are. DO NOT come to Las Vegas if that is your current mindset. First and foremost, bartending school, no matter where you go for it, will NOT get you a job bartending in a casino, or being one of those hot-shot flare bartenders that you see on TV. Secondly, bartending school is the BIGGEST JOKE EVER. As another poster said, yes, it is true, that school is a scam. Most bars/restaurants will not even hire you if you list that as your only experience. I tell the kids that work in my location this all the time. You need to work your way up the ladder; you learn by experience, not a damn thing else.

As far as moving to Vegas... again, if you haven't been there yet, do not move there without taking a trip out there first. Believe me, I'm not trying to discourage you from pursuing a dream, but you have to be a bit realisitic. As many have said, Vegas will chew you up and spit you out if you do not have a reasonable plan of attack. What are you going to do if you can't find a job right away? What about living expenses? What about moving expenses? You really have to look into this a little more before making a change like this.

I seriously wish you the best in your decisions, but think things through a little bit.

*thinks to self*
(my lord, I'm starting to sound like the rest of the locals)

I'd definitely brake out the 'troll radar' here. There are tons of posts like these and it's not uncommon for the OP to not post again after his/her initial post to start the thread. Maybe the OP will return to the thread, but I would not be surprised if (s)he does not.

Obviously the OP's idea is absolutely stupid. That's why the troll alert should be used, b/c there's a good chance this person is not really that dumb.

Vegas has been making strides, but it still does not have that well-diversified an economy and is nowhere near being the new Manhattan. Look at the workforce in NYC vs Vegas; there's no comparison. While NYC may have the most talented workforce in the nation (or world), there are a LOT of other cities whose talent pools are between NYC and Vegas.

LIS123...I think that is a very good point. Probably someone who likes to stir issues on here, then sit back and watch and laugh.

If the post is genuine, I'm a HUGE FAN of people taking a shot in life and following their dreams.

One recommendation would be this. What does the OP think his/her salary will be? Let's just say dreams are big and they will make 1K a week (just an example folks...so no flames please). I would recommend you save up 6K, yes only 6K (and get a round trip exchangeable airline ticket) come to Vegas, rent a home or an apartment for a couple of months, then gamble. See if you can make some money at it. Those mega resorts aren't built because most people that go to Vegas make money at gambling. See how that 6K holds up for you. If things go bad, use your ticket and head back to where you came from or want to go. At least you gave it a shot without giving up everything else.

I used 6K as an example as what I usually spend on vacation for a couple of WEEKS a year.

I will say this though, I always talk with the bar tenders at the Casino when I go to Vegas. One thing that surprises me is that most of them have college degrees, have moved to Vegas from the midwest (Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana, etc...) on the average about 10 years ago.

I don't judge people but was surprised that college degree people (I guess we call them professionals) feel that they can make more money at bar tending then working in thier degreed field. Was an eye opener.

It is true. And it is those people that make this city what it is. I personally love this place, but my career has nothing to do with customer service, and I hear people complaining about this place all the time. I am the one who arrests the people who have their dreams crushed because Vegas is a tough city to make it in and they must steal to pay the bills. Buzz, great post too, I cannot agree more. This is a rough place if you are not prepared for it. The OP has as much of a chance making it here with views like this as I do dating Beyonce.

Gulfer, don't be so suprised. I make more than double working as a bartender than I did at my last two "corporate" jobs. And this is here in suburban NYC, not even a place like Vegas. Keep in mind though, that many of these people may just be doing it as a second source of income. Or they simply have more fun doing it than they would sitting behind a desk.

And don't worry, I'm not out to flame you, just giving my opinion.
