Now what we do is simply AC half the house. We simply live in the back half and leave the front open or close it and set to the mid 80s on a hot day. We will also pump it down in the evenings for dinner. We have relative large AC so we can bring the front down 10 degrees in less than an hour.

I would also note this is an all electric house so our bills never get below $200.

Thinking about one of the time of use plans simply because we would save so much in the low temperature times that it might be a very good deal. i am working up a spread sheet to see what would happen.

Oh and for those who wonder why we have 30 year old AC...when we got them they were around ten years old and we figured they could not go another five so we maintain a high end home warranty which will pay most of the cost of replacement. The only problem is these are the little ACs that could and appear indestructible.
Are they old weathertron units by chance?

while this may be true, it isn't necessarily making up for lost cooling.

an a/c works much better in cooler weather (e.g. night time). so you will likely save a lot of money if not running it during the hottest parts of the day.

Our last electric bill in Las Vegas was our highest ever June. 1200sq ft and nearly $300! I about choked when I got the bill and saw it had nearly doubled in the summer from our previous highest ever bill. We even had guys come and inspect our system prior to that. I suspect part of it had to do with the craziness of our last month with graduation and moving and 24/7 go go go! Another part could be the new water heater installed since the last one died and the electricity seemed to go up, or it could be a coincidence with summer rate increases and additional increase or all of that combined.

Anyways, Our summers with this one exception usually average around $150 a month.

Any thoughts on Time of Use Rates vs Normal rates?

I thought Las Vegas Electric bills was affordable.. but NOT SO!

In California... I barely even used the AC, and I was paying about $50-$75 /month....

So in Las Vegas... while only living in the house just 15 days out of the month.. my electric bill is already 4X my California rate... On a brand new house... w/ new ROOF.

What's wrong w/ this picture?
#1 this is NOT California
#2 you bought brand new 3100" house and are complaining about a $200 power bill
#3 your lack of due diligence

Their bill is likely to be $400 or more

and yes, most of the electric consumption goes to AC if everyone hasn't figured that out by now

Time of use is difficult because, effectively, you get penalized for using electric during 1pm-7pm (plan A), when your house needs ac most

We have a 1644 sq/ft house. We keep the AC at 74 when we are at home. We may drop it to 70 at night time. Our most recent bill (06/20/17 to 07/19/17) was $249.61. The previous bill was $184.04. All appliances are new, the AC is like 10 years old and it seems like it may need to be replaced (we just bought the house).

1800sq ft. Set 75 day or night. $320 last month, $290 this. $60 in Jan. Gas is $20 month.

I used to be on a budget in N.Y. for $390 a month electric, 120 a month gas.. This place is a dream.
