I spent about 10 minutes with google looking for ways to donate new toys, clothes, food etc to the families of active servicemen and servicewomen here in Southern Nevada.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of organizations purporting to support this goal. At the same time I'm more-than-a-bit skeptical that perhaps some of these organizations are really shams where the bulk of financial donations go to administrative fees, or perhaps they are really outright frauds.

Does anyone here on this board have any knowledge about donating such that the proceeds go directly to local-to-Southern-Nevada service families?

Try the Airman and Family Readiness Center on Nellis AFB. 702.652.3327. Open M-F.

Most bases have "Angel Trees" or similar ways to donate an unwrapped toy.

Great idea. I'll try that.

As an aside, I went to the Nellis website, and went to the "contact us" and inquired. The response was to try the USO.

I'm not surprised the base central operator would refer you to the charity most associated with anything military, but Family Services should have contacts to all the agencies who sponsor or coordinate charitable support to military families.

In years past, several different organizations have sponsored Angel Trees on base. I only found older references to Nellis' programs (2014).

Another angle is through the base chaplaincy--they are networked with family services, but might have holiday toy drives planned for military families.

My last suggestion is contacting Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES)--the primary base retail vendor--they often partner in support of toy drives (because they sell toys on base )

Do our military members really need this? Here at Nellis, a lot of young military families seem to have a nice home, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2000 sf and in some cases a pool! Two cars, all the electronic gadgets, and all. Military pay and benefits are quite generous from what I see.

Why in most cases do they need charity?

The young enlisted guys with a wife and a child can. They don't make a lot.
