I also feel safe here, have never had a problem, except once, when someone swiped my trash can,(big one like the ones you rent from republic) but they gave it back, reluctantly when i told them they had a choice to either pay me the $96 i paid for it or go get their own.
Exactly, you make your life how you want it to be!!!! I have lived here almost 10 years, I have not had any bad experiences(knock on wood)!!! Get scared sometimes, but that is just because I grew up in a small town, so sometime it takes some getting use to. And when people talk all the crap they do, you make a mountain out of a mole hill, because you are just expecting the worse, which does not happen much!!!!!

I feel compelled to mention this again, crime is bad anywhere large metro areas exist. Even here in mamby-pamby politically correct Seattle we have it big time as well.

When I read this forum and a thread like this gets started I just roll my eyes Why? Because it always appears it's worse in LV than anywhere else or, its getting worse by the minute and we should all shiver in our boots until we move out of town to a safe area like Seattle or maybe ??.

We have the same problems here. Folks here make excellent money, they dont talk to their neighbors etc etc. In my city, which is 20 minutes south of downtown Seattle, just two weeks ago a 72 year old lady was strangled to death in the parking lot of the nursing home where she had just visited her husband. The suspect then put her body in the trunk of her Mercedes. Nice eh? Even here in the Seattle metro area we get the same nasty crime.

LV Crime wont stop me from relocating to LV or PHX (my other possibility) because I know crime will be in both cities and I will have to take steps to mitigate it in my personal life by protecting my home and my person.

Personally, I am not in a financial position where I can live in a remote or rural area because my job expertise requires me to live in or near large metro areas - it's a job security issue or better stated, I can find another similar paying job in a large metro area but not in Sedona, AZ for example if I get laid off and that's happened to me twice because of the economy. So, its either a large metro area like Seattle, LV or PHX (for example) that I must live - crime is a given in these areas. I meet head on and take a proactive stance to mitigate it and if and when it happens, hopefully I can minimize the impact on me.

The concept of---the area is what you make of it is nonsense. The act of "one" moving somewhere, CANNOT change access to such things as, culture, education, quality health care, weather, or anything else considered desirable by society. Certainly, attitude plays a major role in one's success, but there are many more factors dictated by the established society of a given area. Things of major importance in SF, or say Nome, Alaska simply don't matter in LV. The "desirable" life of every area has been defined, and the fact "you" make life what you want is ridiculous.

I totally agree. You hear about it everywhere, not just Las Vegas. When I first moved here I had family question us on why we would move here. A lot of people do not realize we are more then the strip and SIN CITY. I was at a airport waiting for a flight in Phoenix a couple of years ago. We were at the bar, and talking to people there. There was one couple I think from West Virginia, and I mentioned that we were from Vegas. They looked at me all weird, and actually asked what hotel I lived at???? I laughed so hard, I had to explain that Vegas was more then just the Casinos, which is what most people think. Believe me we are a lot more then just the Casinos!!!!

After losing my first daughter a couple of years ago, our community came together with cards, books, and money. They collected over $300.00 which paid for her head stone. Now that is community. And it was in North Las Vegas, which gets a bad rap on here alot!!!!

But when moving somewhere, why would you want to move to somewhere where if you say that you would not like due to culture, education, weather and so on! You make your choices for the way you want to live. If you don't like the heat and desert then don't move here!!!! If you don't like the big city, then stay in a small city, and make the commute. You make life how you want it. If you are stuck some place where you do not like it, and are not able to make the move to where your ideal place is, then find the positive on where you are living, because you can always find the positive!!! Yes you can also always find the negative, but if you are stuck someplace due to job, or your house won't sell, or just plain money circumstances, why waste your energy on being un-happy when you can find the happiness in a lot of other things!!!!

The level of overlap of southwestern and western cities is quite high. While the mean school in Las Vegas may be less desirable than the mean one in Portland there is probably little difference between the top 10 and the bottom 10 in either. Clearly the median school in Las Vegas is better than the mean school in Los Angeles. But there are lots of fine schools in Los Angeles as good as the best schools in Las Vegas.

There are specific cultural facilities in specific cities that are much better than the norm. But the normal cultural facilities of the cities of the west are similar. My old home in the edge of Orange County had no better local faciliities than does the west side of Las Vegas. And the schools were no better than Summerlin. It had no area equivalent to the center of Las Vegas so its mean was much superior to Vegas. But the good schools were about the same.

In general the nice suburbs of the various cities are quite homogeneous. The middle areas are also similar and the bad areas resemble each other. The mix changes from one city to the other. But the component continue to be much the same.

The belief that Las Vegas is inferior is nonsense. It is more blue color and has less, relatively, of the upper socio-economic strata. So what? The strata is more than sufficient for the needs of its members.

BUGBULLY, I too lost my first child, my son, in 2001 at the age of 14. We lived in MI at the time and part of what I love so much about Aliante is that it reminds me very much of that same small town. He was on the football team and they also raised money to pay for his headstone. It is nice to know that my instincts were correct in choosing to live here in the dreaded North Las Vegas and that the same "small town" compassion is here as well.

Sheriff, I agree partially with what you are saying, you choose to live in an area that has what you are looking for. But we all have free will and free choice so life IS what you make of it.

When we moved here from the northwest we had culture shock, was freakin paranoid, all that stuff.

now I drive though any part of town, convertible top down, etc. It is like any other urban city. good and bad.

the #1 ranking is nothing to freak about. You could just as easily get shot in a driveby in Idaho as here. It is more a matter of where you go in any town.
