Even in dark sky territory it is not great right now, within 3 days of the new moon would be my preference (September 16 - 22)

We went up to mt Charleston for the local astronomy club viewing earlier this summer. Great viewing and they also had some serious equipment up there.

There is a nat'l forestry park/welcome center there right before the lodge at the circle and that's a great spot for star gazing.
