I'm 28, self-employed (work remotely), single, male, pretty independent, laid back (don't drink alcohol or 'party' much) and an avid gym goer. I've been in Colorado Springs the past two years, but just don't see myself staying here despite how beautiful it is and all the hiking opportunities.

The Springs is experiencing tons of population influx since Denver is so crowded now and its driving living costs up rapidly (rent for a decent one-bed place is now around $1000+/month) and buying a place is even worse; not to mention everyone here is in the military, so meeting people/dating is a nightmare.

Main reasons Vegas is on my list of places to move is because:

- I like being on my own/independent, but having friends/family visit would be nice

- Seems like cost of living and real estate are affordable (I'm planning to buy a place in a year or two and keep living costs minimal in the mean time)

- I go to the gym daily and work in the fitness industry so it seems like Vegas would be a great fit for that reason

- I dont really party much or drink alcohol, but it would be fun to play poker every now and then at the many casinos

- I enjoy the outdoors, not to sure what hiking/nature opportunities are around Vegas but those are a plus

- The heat wont bother me, Im aware it gets very hot (Ive lived in Phoenix for a year)

From what I've read, it seems like most people's concerns with Vegas are crime and poor education (some people complain of the traffic but I barely drive and have lived in DC which is about as bad as traffic gets). I don't have kids nor do I plan on having any (might adopt one when I'm older).

Main questions I have are if anyone has made a similar transition from Colorado to Vegas and their experience? Also if it's realistic to find a studio or one-bed apartment in a relatively safe neighborhood for $700-$800 month? If so, which neighborhoods are best?

The rental market is very competitive here. I just finalized a place for around $875 and I make about $30,000. But I have no outstanding debts, college debt or any of that. I'm not a high liver.

You can find a place between 700-800 sure, but do investigate the areas in the $700 range for their safety/crime. Once in a while a $700 rental in an ok/safe area comes on the market, but there's a lot of competition. One recently was gonna have an open house for a rental I applied. Mostly anything in that price range you really need to check on the area. There are no doubt some rentals in the 800 to 900 range that are fine and great. I felt lucky to find one.

I don't drink, have any vices either, but be careful by getting sucked into playing poker.

Small world, just to clarify, you mean the outdoors is better in Vegas?

Ok good to know, I'm happy paying $800 to $900 if it can get me a safer place.

Just curious, is the crime in Vegas really that apparent? Is it more gang related? I've even read the crime here in Colorado springs is 'bad' but honestly have never had any issues. Then again I'm pretty low key and keep to myself so that could be why I don't notice it much.

About all Vegas has going for it compared to the Springs for your situation is its cheaper and it doesn't snow. Poker games mostly are poor in Vegas compared to what you can find in Colorado if that matters to you much. There is some outdoor activity in and around Vegas, but anyone that thinks Vegas has better outdoors activities is delusional.

I have moved to Colorado from Vegas and vice versa and know many people who have done it too. Almost everyone that is happier making the move to Vegas is because they could afford more house or more lifestyle expenses.

Hmmm, I mean I'll admit part of my move away from Colorado is for expense and prospective real estate purposes (and social life). I narrowed my choices down to Vegas, Chattanooga (Tennessee), and Boise, Idaho as they all seem to have affordable cost of living, outdoor opportunities, and good health and fitness culture.

I love Colorado honestly and always have, but the only way I would stay here would be if I moved closer to Denver or maybe fort collins, but the rent is ridiculous in those areas and buying a house is even worse.

I'd definitely pay the extra couple hundred bucks to get into a better apartment.

Honestly, I don't think Vegas is any better or worse than any other city when it comes to crime and gangs. There's good areas, so-so areas and areas you want to steer clear of. The only major gripe I have is homeless people and junkies are EVERYWHERE. It sucks getting hit up for money 24/7. Aside from that, Vegas is a pretty cool place.

In my opinion, yes. Proximity of Red Rock and Mt Charleston areas make it much better hiking and mt biking. Add Lake Mead and the Colorado River and there is a ton of stuff within 45 miles. Expand a bit further and you've got Zion, Death Valley, Brian Head, Big Bear, etc. My frustration in the Springs was how far away anything was…skiing = 3 hours, 14ers = 3 hours, airport = 1:30…the list goes on.

We hike, bike, camp, Jeep, kayak and feel Vegas location is better than Springs (not better than Colorado).

Air quality anywhere in Colorado is much better than Las Vegas

I would also think anywhere in Colorado is much nicer and better for outdoor stuff

I wonder if any other people from Colorado will move (back) here because of the new marijuana laws
