Very few people can beat the house gambling long term....I'm still thinking the shooter lost everything gambling and decided to go out with a big bang!

Suicide and gambling are an issue:
AT THE SHORE; In Atlantic City, Suicide Is Casino Gambling's Unspoken Worry - The New York Times

'The gambler in the desperate stages alienates himself from their families, their friends,'' said Edward Looney, executive director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey. ''That's when they start to isolate, they're not talking to people about their feelings, and that's where we see that suicide becomes an alternative.''
Just read today that he supposedly gifted Marilou Danley 100K a few days before the shooting. And he supposedly owned a plane. Don't think he was part of the 1% but he was better off than most.

It will be interesting when more info comes out. This is incredibly bizarre because the guy was a 60-something retired baby boomer, multi-millionaire, owned planes, multiple houses, etc... A lot of the other shootings had been much younger or terrorism related (Columbine, Denver movie, VA Tech, Orlando, San Bernadino, etc...).

And how you make that jump from having no criminal record, showing no outward signs of major mental instability .....to stock piling 40 guns and coming up with a master minded carefully plan (that I'm sure took months) to shoot hundreds of people from a hotel window? That is a incomprehensible level of evil. It is really hard to fathom that anyone who everybody thought was a normal guy could all of a sudden snap and do this and have no record of doing anything similar for 64 years. He "snapped" over weeks or months since this took a lot of careful planning. A lot of people have mental issues, snap, or lose it all gambling, but they don't do this.

This is not something where someone lost it in a moment of rage or anger. He had weeks, probably months to think about... OK WTF I am doing here and do I really want to do this?

It will be interesting what his girlfriend has to say.

Something I've been wondering about... how many days was he in this hotel room? They said he built a platform so he could have a better angle out the one window.. and setting everything up had to have taken a good amount of time, plus the cameras.

Ok, thinking about that, did this room have no maid service, coming to put fresh towels in or anything along those lines? I don't understand.

My condolences to those who lost loved ones or have friends and family injured. It will be a long while before we feel "normal" again.

According to the sheriff's press conference today, they said he at least did get room service. Not clear if maids entered the room, but as oecc said in the previous post, you just put out the Do Not Disturb and the housekeeping staff will stay out.

It has also been said that he took as many as 10 suitcases into his room over the few says he was there. if he had a platform it would have been simple to have that un-assembled and ready to set up once he arrived.

He did get room service every day, but by the 9 window distance between the broken windows, he probably had his gun setups in either bedrooms (the layout is two bedrooms separated by a large common area.)

Room service would have delivered to the common areas that looked normal. He could also request towels and whatnot delivered there as well. I assume he stayed in his room the whole time to keep control of the situation, hence the room service.

Room service can also be left in the hall, so they may not have come in the room at all

A regular guy just snaps. There is no way to protect ourselves against that.
We all just have today, guys, so treat each day as precious.
Am I the only one that saw this coming? Las Vegas was always a known target for terrorist attacks. It's in two ISIS videos with suggestive images like the Bellagio Hotel. It was always a matter of when, not if. After the Paris attacks and the pulse night club attack the LV media questioned security at Las Vegas night clubs and they said they have plans and prepare their security for these attacks and they work closely with the law enforcement. That they take it very seriously and this was all way before this attack. We had confidence in them and the law enforcement did have a great response.

This guy wasn't regular. He didn't snap either. He planned it.

I guess I'm practical about it. When nothing changes and it keeps escalating.

59 dead with 12 still in critical condition so it could be 71 total. Around the initial number involved I'd posted earlier. Someone may have been on the ball and called it.

For the people left behind, you can blame a group because one of their members did this, or you can blame someone for not seeing the signs and saying something. But this case is different, there doesn't seem to be a reason, there doesn't seem to be have been any signs, I'm not sure how this really could have been prevented. [mod cut]

I'm not sure how we, as a society, will deal with the fact that someone who was not a political or religious radical, wasn't mentally ill, and lived a life that many people would envy, just decided that he wanted to kill a bunch of people.

Since no one has said it yet I guess I will. It seems the media wants us to believe it's because he's a wealthy, godless, psychopath like his father. This nut didn't fall too far from the tree.

How could you seek treatment if you don't even know you need it?

I don't go ask for chemo before I know I have cancer.

First off, my thoughts and condolences go out to all the individuals and families affected by this terrible tragedy ! Prayers for a speedy recovery for Las Vegas!

I've said this time and time again to anyone who will listen - mental health problems are greatly effecting our society. And our government and the healthcare industry really need to start better addressing mental health issues so that we can minimize the amount of violence situations that are occurring in our society way too often. (note: I am NOT saying that it would have helped this time).

I am going to speculate on this particular man. I believe that he probably had some sort of undiagnosed mental condition (possibly inherited from his father's side), along with a gambling addiction and incurred great losses that led to him seeking revenge on the Las Vegas strip.

I am curious though, if he did owe a lot of money to Mandalay Bay, would MB allow that type of information to be disclosed to the media? It seems to me if this were true, it would leave them open to much greater liability and therefore not be something they would easily want disclosed???
