Yes the article is in the New Yorker but it's about events in Las Vegas. I have now read it several times. There are lots of people on this forum who have been here for a long time and I would love to hear their take on it.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2...e-their-rights

Is it really this easy to lose your rights and property here? Sounds like if you are elderly and have to get some help, the healthcare workers will turn you in to someone and then poof. Your FairyGuardianMother shows up and steals all your stuff with the assistance of the courts. Can this possibly be true?

I was my father's guardian after he was diagnosed with dementia in Minnesota. It was a long process with lawyers and a court hearing. If my father had been 'with it' there was no way I would have been granted guardianship and he would have known what was happening. I still remember the lawyer telling us that the court took it very seriously when it came to denying someone's rights to self determination and if an error was made it would always be in favor of the individual.

More than a couple of us are on the north side of 50. Assuming we still have our marble, how can we protect ourselves?

That law has been outlawed and the woman is now in jail.

I know it looks like a recent article but someone said it was from 2013, made it way around FB.

Yeah it was a terrible tale a few years back. I would think easily avoided if you were mostly together. Though once trapped in it very hard to get free.

I believe there was another version of it in Nye County.

And, if I remember correctly there was more involved than the evil witch.

It was a classical bureaucracy run amok. And once you were trapped the problem is the bad guys controlled your resources.

Is this still happening?

I believe it has been heavily revised. Particularly the trap if you enter the system.

Not fully effective until January 1, 2018.

And a good one!

Not sure how many know that the change in the law in Nevada was brought about by a couple of people who refused to give up. I feel stupid because I should remember their names. But I'm old, so....

BTW, the town in Iowa is pronounced nev A duh. And I believe it's older than the state of Nevada.

Edit: Yup. Nevada, Iowa 1853. State of Nevada 1864.

Daily dose of trivia.

It might not be illegal til jan 2018, but the woman that was doing most of it is in prison now. And if someone else steps in, they won't have an easy time of taking this over.
