I've been looking at cars to buy in Vegas, and some say you pay the 8.1% sales tax to the seller, but I swear I've heard before that you pay the sales tax when you get it registered. Anyone know which it is?

not true... If you buy from a dealer, you pay the dealer the sales tax.... If you buy from an individual that has a NEVADA title and already has paid NEVADA salestax, you may not have to pay the tax... Otherwise, other than a dealership sale, tax is paid when you title the vehicle at the dmv.

Private party vehicle purchases from any state are tax free. I have bought cars from CA and TX (both titled in their respective states) in the last couple years and paid no tax when I registered. It's nice!

This information is published on the State Website.

Either, neither, or both.

So if you are looking for a tax free deal...keep looking.

You pay tax here and it will be credited to Missouri (if bought from dealer). If bought from individual, you pay tax in missouri

I know this thread is old but came across this at the number one google link covering sales tax on autos bought in Nevada.
https://www.salestaxhandbook.com/nev...s-tax-vehicles

"Nevada collects a 8.1% state sales tax rate on the purchase of all vehicles. Some dealerships may also charge a 149 dollar documentary fee. The maximum tax that can be charged is 950 dollars."

My question is that if I buy a $40K car is my tax only $950? Or is it the 8.1% $3240. If it is the later what are they talking about with the $950 maximum.

the tax would be 8.25% $3300. The doc fee is not a tax. dealers charge this.. average is $300-$500. First year license plates will cost you about $750 per year
