When i lived in Vegas (about 2 years ago) i was paying $130 in the summer for electric/month, and about 60-70 in the cooler months when no AC was required. That was me keeping my apartment at 65 degrees though, as i liked it really cold!

If you end up in an upstairs unit, you will pay a lot more for electric in the summer, but a lot less for gas in the winter.
Since winter doesn't last long here, i'd say go for the ground floor unit, which will be cooler in the summer, but colder in the winter. The savings will really add up.

Does anyone have hard numbers? I am thinking upstairs primarily because of noise. It's true the downstairs should be cheaper since you only, depending, have two exposed walls. Seems like there should not be substantial difference in a well insulated apartment. You're not actually heating two levels, and I would think the same thing applies that what matters is exposed walls and not 1st or 2nd floor.

So the other trade-off, if the posts around here are accurate, is bugs. I feel like the extra energy expense in an upstairs unit would be worth it if it substantially reduces the risk of bugs. But maybe that doesn't matter.

Fist off, you need to find a well insulated apartment. We live in so called "luxury" apartments that I can hear my neighbor talking on the phone sometimes. A lot of my friends are in the same boat. Apartments are built cheap here from what I can gather.

We pay about $30 a month since October. Have not been here for a summer yet, but my neighbor sets her apartment at 70 all day and her bill is about $160. We both have 1100 sf and upstairs units.

$30 a month is cheap. Up north mine runs $80-$90 a month (all electric) and about triple that for Nov-Feb.

Great info....Thanks!

I agree. I own a first floor unit of 1300 sq.ft. and my electric never tops $120in the summer, even in last years brutal heat. My upstairs neighbor had her A/C running practically 24/7 last year. Can't thank her enough for helping me keep my electric bill down.

$33 month electric and $46 was my highest gas bill! Most apts. are "balanced" which means you pay gas and electric bill. I can hear EVERYTHING my neighbors say and do which drives me nuts! They know it and are by far the WORST neighbors I've ever had.

Chinadoll, if you get condo construction,(new, not conversion), which also includes townhomes, you won't hear your neighbors talk, sneeze, fart or hear their TV's, but you will hear doors slam, although it's muted, and if they crank up their music, unfortunately, we can also hear that. But it's much quieter than an apt complex. And better constructed buildings also offer better insulation which keeps utility costs down too.

I have gas heat so that helps. 30 or so a month for that so we are about even. I also came from the frozen tundra of Wyoming so we dont even run the heat.
