I just got here a week ago for a three-month stay.

I'm currently mooching off my neighbors open wireless connection... but it's really slow. I want to setup my own connection, even though I'm only here another 12 weeks, but Cox is charging $99 install... plus $35 for basic cable install. D@mn, where I'm from it's always free for new customers to setup cable. It's not like I need a new line put in, the outlets are already here.

Anyone know of any promotions that can get the cost a little lower?

Or another ISP that doesn't require a phone line?

Thanks in advance!

Are you staying at an apartment or condo? If so, it means the place is probably pre-wired by Cox and they probably don't need to do a "truck roll" for a tech to visit your house. In these times of intense cable vs. satellite vs. telco competition, all you have to do is call the Cox customer order desk and plead your case, tell them how much you would love to sign up but don't want to pay the installation fee. Don't tell them you are only there for 3 months. If the service rep doesn't agree, tell them you would like to speak with a supervisor. Tell them you really don't want to buy DSL from Embarq, but to get your business Cox needs to drop the install fee. I'll bet you will win. Cox won't lock you into a long term contract or charge you a disconnect fee when you leave.

Thanks I will try that!

Are there any other non-DSL broadband providers out here?

Re. home internet w/Clear requires a 2 yr contract unless you buy the modem, so keep that in mind vs. cable, that you are paying $5 a mo. as well to "lease" the modem. Plus buy it online, there is a better deal online than the Clear stores, where they send you the modem. It works ok, but I never got more than 1.5 mbps, I check it all the time on the online sites that tell you your 'speed.' It must depend on where you live how much speed you will get. Watching youtube videos was very annoying when they stop and it reloads. I can find no info. on when they are "adding more towers." Plus they told me my speed was 'slow' because the "tower was down" well the tower must have been down for a week now, not. The modem also only has 2 lts lit no matter where it is placed.

thinking Cox Cable is better.
