I have one other thing to say. It's one of my favorite things to say. "It takes all kinds in this world."

I did meet all kinds in Las Vegas. Twice I had a parking attendant try to pick me up by saying "his Boss" wanted my number.

Ya right Buddy! We both know who your Boss is and he's got a date with Rosey Palms later or the ladies of the night off Tropicana and Jones. It was bad enough the first time he tried it. Yeck! *spitz The second time he stuck a note with spit to my window with the same message and a number. I found it when I came back to my car.

I wouldn't give him my real name or number either. He got my alter ego alias, Jenny, for guys I hope I never meet again. I feel like I'm a Jenny but people say I look like an Ashley. Sometimes they call me that by complete accident repeatedly. So weird.

eff

Then there are the lovely people at the Walmart on Charleston and Decatur stories I've told on here before.* Jeez Louiz

Don't worry newbies. Need friends? They'll ask for some change, knock on your windows in an intersection at a stop light, and come right up to your rolled down window surprising you while sitting in your car in parking lots (doesn't matter where) and have a whole conversation with you (it's really proselytizing), or they follow you to your car and creep you the eff out. Watch out going into some places these days. They're security guards everywhere at regular stores off the strip.

.
.
.
.

That definitely took some getting used to.

I agree with what someone else said, if you look for the worst here, you will find it.

If you are someone who has a I'm better than you, uptight personality, this city isn't for you. Bravo on you for having your education and judging everyone else. I have two college degrees, a life insurance license and many other impressive credentials, but I treat everybody the same. I feel sad for these homeless people who ask me for dollars or change. I always step back a few steps when they approach me just in case, but I don't shame them for it.

It takes work, knowledge, life experience to understand how to present yourself in the best light. Some never learned or maybe lack self confidence when it comes to dressing up, suits.

I am from a major East coast city and the same issues were there. There are uneducated people everywhere who do messy things, homeless, have mental issues, etc. It is not just limited to Vegas. It just is more featured here because this America's adult playground.

If you don't like strip clubs, casinos, nightlife, drinking, etc, then just don't go to those places here. There are plenty of outdoor activities and other things in the city to do.

It feels like there are some people in this city who want the Candy Land view of this city where there are no homeless, robberies, people selling illegal sex, selling drugs, etc. I can promise you this stuff goes on in many other cities in America. It's just brought to light more here. I wish those things didn't exist too, but many human beings are flawed by nature or end up in bad situations by choice or sometimes not unfortunately. I don't endorse any illegal activity obviously.

I don't drink, smoke marijuana, gamble excessively or do any kind of drugs here or go to strip clubs, but who am I or is anyone else to judge if consenting adults want to do those things? Just don't hang around those people if it bothers you so much.

The reason America is where it is because we spend too much time worrying about what other adults are doing in their personal lives instead of just focusing on economic and civil liberties issues. Last I read in Las Vegas Weekly a few weeks ago, most Las Vegas residents have poor credit scores and suck at money management.

The reason people here have lower credit scores is that they were here when the crash hit. Foreclosures Shortsales etc

Average household debt in America is $15,000. It's not just people who lost money during the crash or real estate issues. Not everyone owns a home here. There are many renters.

Since two things were mentioned tied to my posts I will respond to them.

While I do have standards and I hold my inner circle of friends to a higher standard it's not without compassion for others with lower standards.

Last year I helped raise 87K for homeless veterans in southern Nevada. The year before that I helped raised 100K for a non-profit charity and won a national award for it. All of it was donating my time and skill set to something I believe in to make circumstances better for those living in Las Vegas. I've learned that's how I can use my platform and privilege to be a good ally. I'm no perfect angel but at least I do what I can, and I have a history of service to others.

Yes, my hobbies include cooking fresh meals from my husband and I, and donating my time to charity, while also running numerous online meetup and support groups over the years. Which is an entirely thankless job that you have to develop a thicker skin for. So make fun of my life if you want to. I don't really care what other people say. They're not the ones that have to walk a mile in my shoes. Though some days it seems like I've been driving this mile for awhile and they can cancel my subscription because I don't need their issues.

Even with an education, awards or accomplishments in life and helping others I know I'm still eating the dust of other more successful people. I hope we may all strive to be better than we were the day before. However, what I learned from this charitable organization with my time spent there is that you can help some of the people some of the time, but you can't help all the people all the time. No matter how descent and bleeding hearted one is. It's just not possible.

My point with my prior posts though was mainly for a single young woman moving to this area of Nevada is to be safe. Carry mace. You don't have to go looking for trouble when they'll find you. I'm married and it can still be dangerous with unsavory characters looking to take advantage of you. Such as random randy parking lot attendants trying to score with anything that comes to their place of business. Along with other examples given there's always someone looking for their next mark, and it's everywhere there.

Maybe I wasn't clear in that evidence of this is there are security guards everywhere in Las Vegas even off the Strip in regular neighborhoods including the fancy ones. Mainly they're inside the buildings to protect their goods, but they're also outside the buildings in parking lots to protect the patrons and staff. They're in stores you wouldn't necessarily see them in other cities I've lived in. It's a different world then most are used to. And then there are the bars on windows and doors, and the gated communities that don't really keep them out. It's not Candy Land that's for sure.

They rent because they lost their homes

One thing I have learned through the years on Las Vegas C/D is that no matter what topic, you're going to get a fair percentage of people who will disparage Las Vegas. I'm not someone who really looks to spend time with other people, so my opinion is different than one who needs companionship from others to feel content, but I truly believe that if you want to make friends you can make them here. As was suggested, meetup groups would be a good place to start. Common interests are necessary in establishing solid personal relationships.

This is a GREAT post! I'm totally with you, my girlfriend and I love Las Vegas and neither of us drink anymore (health reasons, it just wasn't working out for our lifestyles), do drugs, or gamble whatsoever. I play Texas Hold 'Em sometimes but that's a game of skill and I've not only played for thousands of hours but read many books on it, etc. Back in the day I'd put $20 into one of the sites (I didn't trust them with much) and turned that into $600, withdrew all but $100, put it into another site, turned that into $600, and then had to wait about 2 years while the Department of Justice returned my money lol.

People ask us, "Why do you guys like Vegas so much if you don't even drink and gamble?!" I find it honestly quite insulting and uncreative because there is a lot more to enjoy than just that. I love simple things when I visit, just walking the Strip and people watching, taking in the sights, and we love shows, comedy standup routines, occasional concerts / music, shopping, great dining, there is a lot to enjoy. None of that has much to do with living there, but it's nice to have those options for a fun night out rather than most cities where there just isn't much to do at all.

You can choose to do whatever you want in a city, but I think it's great to have options.

Yep...the casino marketing people have done an excellent job of painting the picture of Las Vegas being nothing but non-stop casinos and parties. Seems like when most people hear you live in Las Vegas, there's always some sort of initial question like "oh really, that sounds neat, what casino do you live in?" I usually say something like "that's so 1960's, we live in the 4th ring of refrigerator boxes outside" to get a laugh..

Anyway there is another benefit to living here. You'd be amazed at how often family and friends want to come visit. We're taking reservations out to September already, and are thinking of just creating a google calendar so they can just find the times and make sure there's room, and make their own online reservations...LOL We rarely have anything to drink, and gamble even less (I think less than $10 the past two and a half years we've been here) but really enjoy all of the other things to do here, and having guests on a regular basis makes it just that much more fun.

It sounds like you are planning on a nice house. As a suggestion, add a couple guest rooms with en suites, in their own private wing, and you'll find they are well used..

HAHA yeah no doubt that is totally true! We definitely want to have a guest bedroom specifically for people who are visiting, besides having a few masters, but because my GF is going through her own little... I don't know what you'd call it... change of mind, change of plans, we're adapting our strategy a bit. She was a vegetarian then a vegan for 3.5 years, then last week decided to eat meat again. Totally at random. Now she tells me that she'd be open to moving to Las Vegas soon, whenever really, because I showed her this house that would be perfect for us at present for $759,000. We both were getting depressed doing research into custom luxury homes because I think even my maximum budget *5 years from now* of $1.5M may simply be unrealistic, not because of our crazy standards (the house would be 4,500 square feet, not that enormous), but because most of these luxury builders are not even taking meetings with people who don't have $2M. Las Vegas has become a huge luxury market.

So the thought occurred to me, well why not just buy a house that's more within our immediate budget, and then we'd still be in Las Vegas enjoying our lives better, while keeping our monthly bills very low compared to the income, thus stockpiling cash (that I can reinvest) to get closer to building a dream home more like 10 years from now. Sure, it would stink that I have to wait longer for that, but I'd have only a 2-3 year wait until being in Las Vegas rather than 5, so it's a compromise. I don't want to be stuck where I am just because I'm too set on moving up huge when I get to Vegas. I'm ok with more of a steady move up (our current house is around $600K to $625K so an $800K house is a step up but not crazy).
