In fact after the debacle last year with that consultant getting busted with other cheaters in AC, the casinos are very careful who they even bring in to consult. But the bottom line is the pay for such jobs is like $10-$15 an hour and that is at a high end casino.

Security at casinos is just that, security pay. And yes what other posters say is true. If you are not a walk around uniformed guard, you have to know the games to a tee so they don't just hire from other industries much as they are looking for certain gaming behavior.
As far as I know, a CONVICTED cheater will never be hired to work on-property, as those convicted gaming cheats are likely in the "black book", or on the excluded list. Such persons are not allowed on-property, whether their position be, key management, or porter. However, I am sure, there are 'known associates" of gambling cheats, that were not convicted, and employed by resorts.

As a post script, the job of surveillance, is to, #1, record on film, and thereby document the assets of the property, in areas that are cash-sensitive, or where a large dollar amount of inventory passes. Those areas include, the pit drop, the slot drop, any time a large amount changes hands, ie; cashier cage, slot payoff, etc. Purse snatching, credit stealing on slots, and the like are the mainstay of surveillance. It is very, very rare for surveillance to catch an actual gaming cheat in the act. It does however, prove very effective in things such as payoff disputes, and ficticious claims.

You are dead on sheriff. Surveillance techs are rarely even looking for cheats. A surveillance tech once told me that the cameras on the tables are just recording much of the time. They are often watching places like soft count, hard count and the such. They are watching security making escorts and table fills. They cover security's ass during moments when it's needed. They are on the lookout for minors in gaming areas and for trespassed people. Many times if there is a suspected cheat, the pit boss will then ask surveillance to review the tape and security will then discreetly ask the individual to come to the back of the house and wait for law enforcement. If diplomacy fails, all bets are off.

when diplomacy fails you resort to the Benny Binion form of justice and ya throw em up the stairwell a couple of times......

however I do have to disagree on the cheat thingie....at least in our place surveillance watchs monitors, and strolls the casino looking for cheats [on BOTH sides of the fence] and I DO agree with Sheriff.....[I may have misspoken] we don NOT employ CONVICTED cheats but DO employ KNOWN FORMER cheats[ the ones that 'saw the light' before they GOT convicted.]

Just a matter of terms--- but a surveillance TECH---is one who maintains, and installs equipment----a surveillance OPERATOR does the watching.
