Moving to Las Vegas
We are moving to Las Vegas in the next 6 to 8 weeks. We are fairly unfamiliar with the area and are looking to live in a "lower" crime/safer area. Any ideas of the best areas to live in? It doesn't have to be in Las Vegas, but can be 20 to 25 miles away.
Thanks!

20 to 25 miles away.....you can live under a yucca tree lol....Vegas[metro area] is pretty much the choice........do a search and you'll see all the pros and cons of every area of town.

First and foremost: Welcome to Las Vegas
As for what areas are best, and lowest crime, please make use of the search feature of the Las Vegas City-Data Forum. This topic has been discussed at length, and I'm sure you will find quite a lot of information.
20-25 miles from where? Assuming you mean center strip, 20-25 miles will still have you in the city of Las Vegas, albeit parts of unincorporated Clark County.
Best of luck with your move. Welcome to Las Vegas

Thank you daveyjones for suggesting the search feature. Last time it was me and i got jumped on, trampled on, spit on, flipped off, ragged on, slapped, punched, kicked, and tossed into a virtual garbage can for pickup on monday.
Zachmi, there are plenty of great places to live where you do not have to live over 20 miles away. Like dyn said, it would be under a yucca tree at 25 miles away.
It's hard to suggest area's for someone not knowing what kind of criteria is suitable for them besides low-crime.

On Monday? Funny, I don't recall the forecast calling for extreme winds that day
Yeah, Pink, I saw that. I tried to be as nice as possible, just in case of another "backlash" Although I may have been a little off in my mileage estimates... 25 miles definitely gets you farther out there than here.

OK.... More specifically
I have used the search feature!
We are moving from the Boulder/Louisville, Colorado Area. I lived in Denver for 7 years and Portland and Bend Oregon before that.
I have heard Henderson and Summerville are the nice places to live!
We have a 8 month old so we are not to worried about schools for now and will probably move out of Vegas in the next few years before he starts.
Needless to say we are moving for work..... and yes, I already have the job and I am not an aspiring actor.
We are looking for an area where my wife is not afraid of going to the parks or store when I am working or out of town. Other than that...... no drive bye's, with decent parks, and "lower crime".
I have a feeling we will end up in a gated community, but are Henderson and Summerville the only places? We will be flying out this month and want an idea of areas to check out. Thanks!

I've lived in "safe" vegas and "dangerous" parts of Vegas. Any police officer and even apartment manager will tell you that there is no safe part of Las Vegas. Bad guys travel on foot, by public transit, bicycle, car, you name it. I've even lived in the suburb Henderson and still encountered dangerous situations on Green Valley Pkwy at night. Just like in other parts of vegas, I've seen prostitutes walking along Gree Valley Pkwy near my "nice" apartment complex. My Las Vegas metropolitan cop friend told me a lot of the pedophiles are located in Henderson as well.

Colorado is a great place to live. Are you moving because of the job offer? I love visiting Colorado. I have a brother that moved there right around Thanksgiving last year and he is already tired of all that snow! He's in Denver.
As for neighborhoods your wife can walk in and feel safe, there are so many good choices, it's hard to list them all.. try Aliante, Summerlin, Green Valley to start.
Now not having lived in Green Valley, but only visiting there, it looks nice, has lots of sidewalks, incredible Strip views. It's hotter in the summer.
Summerlin is preferred by many. Homes are more expensive there. You can live in gated or ungated there. It has an incredible trail system, lots of tree's, and meandering paths. Family friendly. Just a very nice community overall. It's also cooler in the summer by a few degree's. If it snows in the valley during the winter once or twice, Summerlin is usually where it lands. or The Lakes, right next to it.
Aliante is still in its infancy more or less. Development started in the summer of 2003. I moved over here in Jan. 2004 from the other side of town.
We have a 24 mile inter-connecting trail system. 3 parks. Smaller than Summerlin, but still good. Pretty tree-lined streets. Shopping you can walk to. Family friendly. Lots of people out and about all the time.
As for walking alone, I still say walk during the day, and you will be fine. Be cautious no matter where you are.
I used to walk alone after dark every night for exercise while living in The Lakes. I never had a problem at all. Although i felt a little uneasy from time to time.. I did quit doing that about a year before I moved though.
I have since walked alone a lot here in Aliante the past few years, on the trail system and neighborhoods, at night as well as during the day. Never a problem with anyone.
Other area's to check into: Rhodes Ranch, Mountains Edge, The Lakes, Peccole Ranch.
I'm sure others can offer more advice about their area's and where to avoid.
Good luck on your move.
