So the other day, a 15 mile stretch of I-11 (bypassing Boulder City) opened to traffic. Wondering what people who may drive between Las Vegas and various parts of Arizona think of it. Also what do Boulder City locals think now that there will be less traffic on old US 93 through the town.

We live down on the south end of Henderson and went into the old historical section of Boulder City last week for lunch at the Coffee Cup. I was talking to one of the antique shop owners and he thinks the new bypass will kill a lot of businesses in Boulder City. I still think people from Henderson and Las Vegas will go into town for the shops, but obviously they're going to lose the drive-through traffic. There are some nice places down down there and I hope they don't get hurt too badly.

If there is a silver lining, at least the traffic won't back up anymore going through that area with all the trucks that went through there. They did manage to build a special exit for the old Railroad Pass Hotel/Casino and that will still do okay. I know if I was driving to Arizona or needed to get to Route 40 through Kingman, I would use the bypass and save a lot of time.

Boulder City residents were asking for this weren't they?

Is it true they are planning to add-on to make it a straight shot to phoenix?

I think it's great they built it, going through Boulder was always backed up traffic, at least when I went. It probably will take away some business in the city, though. That's the downside.

The IH-11 project is all the way to Nogales, mostly overlaid on existing routes (like 93 between here and Phoenix). It is decades from becoming a true interstate highway all the way.

I don't think AZ wants to put up the money for the project, just like CA won't fix the 15 between Vegas and So Cal

Yeah, I would assume if you lived there, you would want this. The places that are going to take the biggest hit are the gas stations and fast-food joints. Touristy places and artsy-fartsy shops will do fine.

It's supposed to shave off 30 minutes between Phoenix and Las Vegas. Every little bit helps!

What is there to fix? I follow 2 simple rules and I never have a problem on this route:

Never leave town on a Sunday.
Never come home on a Friday or Saturday.

I set out yesterday just to drive it. Sorry I didn't take any pictures.

From Henderson to 95 south (Searchlight) it's an all concrete speedway, done like the best Amercian roads could be built. The bigger than life size artwork and iron sculptures are beautiful. The overpass over 95 has Iron bridges as a wall/facade. Awesome stuff.

Then you get to the Federally built road, aesthetically it's far more beautiful a drive through a stretch of mountains and passes on the east side before it joins up with the Tillman bridge. The overpasses and bridges all have some iron works type sculptures of construction or big horn sheep ramming each other, there's one bridge with high rounded Gothic arches....very very nice. But......it's black top, no left side shoulder to speak of, and that new 4 wire center divider catch instead of a concrete barrier....still very nice, just not as nice a roadway as the Nevada built roadway. There is concrete barriers where it narrows though the mountains.

It's really a beautiful stretch of highway, done masterfully for visual effects and drive-ability.
