Relatively new to the area and want to visit friends in Ventura County. I flew last month and with the time wasted at the airport, I'm thinking a drive will actually be less time. I have a week off from work...what's the best time to hit the road?

Just don't go on Sunday or a holiday Monday and you're good. And don't try to come back on Friday afternoon. If you have to go Sunday hit the road before 9am

Surely traveling by air would be quicker... not sure why time would be wasted at the airport. Just choose a direct flight if possible of course and have your transportation pickup ready. A flight to LA is an hour at most. How could that be more time than driving? I know you said Ventura County not LA. But even commuting from LAX to Ventura would still save time VS. driving from LV.

Traffic on I-15 can be unpredictable. While Willy702's advice is spot on about the worst times to go, an accident at an off-peak time can also snarl (or completely halt) traffic.

Personally, I would fly. I had rather wait in an airport than behind the wheel of my car at a dead stop an hour into a four-and-a-half hour trip.

If you don't leave on Sunday, there's no reason you'll get caught in traffic an hour into your trip.

I drove from here to Newport Beach in 4 hours exactly.

I drove from here to San Diego (Coronado naval base area) in 5 hours and 15 minutes.

Hell, on a Wed rush hour, I went from Burbank to Long Beach in 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Went to Laguna Niguel the Monday b4 Thanksgiving. Average speed was around 80 or so. Peak for me was close to 100.

That was pacing traffic in the middle lane. Left lane was faster. One wrong move and there are a lot of injured and dead. Almost got side swiped 5 times by people not noticing I was in the lane next to them.

Trip back Saturday was fairly calm going east. The westbound traffic was a parking lot for miles on end.

1) Parking
2) TSA
3) Boarding
4) Deboarding
5) Pick up rental car

And then a 1 hour 42 minute drive from LAX to Ventura. (google maps)

Yes standard protocol that is still less time than the 5 hour (on a good day) drive from LV to Ventura. The OP mentioned time wasted at the airport, not the additional drive time you mention.

Why would one fly into LAX if visiting Ventura. Fly into Burbank.
