Firstly, I would like to apologize for the repost, I decided to edit by removing some irrelevant questions, and changing my subject title to try and initiate some responses as I am in scramble mode. Please forgive me if I broke any of the board rules or decorum.

So I wanted to give a little update on my situation. A few weeks ago, I posted a thread asking for insight on the neighborhoods my apartment search Las Vegas. I have found my apartment, I will be living at:

Vista Del Valle Apartments
4051 W Viking Rd.
(Over by the Palms/Rio casinos)

The neighborhood is decent, within 10 minutes to where I’ll be working (a casino on the strip), and the place offers some exclusive amenities (rent includes water/sewage/gas, which most places don’t). As I continue to prepare myself as much as possible, I am compiling some questions and answers for the move. If anyone could help me with some personal knowledge or info, it would help me out tremendously. My current questions and concerns about Las Vegas are:

1 How much do cooks generally make, specifically on the Strip in a casino buffet?

I currently work at a MGM casino in Cleveland,Oh and I make $13.50/hr as a line cook in the casino buffet. I am transferring out to a MGM in Las Vegas. The issue is that I don’t move until April, so I can’t start the transfer process too early (I was told we will begin process in March, about a month before the move). I don’t even know what casino I will be working for yet. As you all probably know, MGM owns many casinos on the Strip (Bellagio, Mirage, MGM grand etc). So once I start the transfer process, I will be placed into an open position at one of their casinos.

2 How much more should I expect in car insurance in general?

During my trip to Las Vegas to search for apartments, I asked most people what the biggest adjustment to cost of living I should expect. Most people said it was the fees associated with your vehicle. I currently pay $215 per month on car insurance, so how much more should I expect? I did a quick quote search for the Nevada address I will reside, and Progressive brought back an start of $60 + 5 monthly payments of $150 upfront. This is actually a discount, so should I really expect a big change in auto insurance/fees in Nevada compared to Ohio?

3 Do employees have to pay for parking on the Strip?

I forgot to ask someone during my trip, as it slipped my mind. If I work at a casino on the strip, will I have to the $15 fee for my parking every day?



I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me with these questions. Also I apologize again for the repost. I just need as much real, personal advice as I can get in this situation. It’s stressful when you are making this type of move, especially doing it alone. Thanks again to everyone in advance!

About the same if you get the hours. Maybe $1-$2 more
But in Vegas, you are a number, that’s it. They can fire for any reason
You will work harder then ever before to maintain your job. Don’t forget to get your licenses and cards

Are you comparing apples to apples. Insurance is generally a little higher in Vegas

No you will park in employee lots....prepare for a long walk

Why did you get your apartment now instead of when you actually move?

RE: Insurance, everyone is different and there are dozens of variables. One person might experience an increase, the other a decrease, though both moved from OH.

Simply call YOUR Insurance Agent/Company and give them your new address. They'll give you a quote right then. With that in-hand, call other companies and get quotes for same coverage.

RE: Parking fees - ASK MGM! They're your employer for Christ sake.

FWIW, I've moved more times than I can count. The kind of move you're making is actually very simple. So breathe.

I assume you're young'ish and single? Easy as pie to move.

Call PODS, they'll drop one off, pack it, they'll ship it to you in LV. Then unpack it. Done.

Drive to Vegas. I do 16-hour days, but some folks do 8-hours per day. There's no rush, so whatever works for you.
Some folks like to stop and smell the roses, I just want to get as much blacktop in the rearview as possible.

Go to NV DMV. Do this fast, you don't have much time (15 days maybe? I forget).

ALSO, did you ask your current HR Dept about your NV Work Card?? Gottagitit.

MGM is a HUGE employer in LV, so the HR Dept will be sizable. Call them immediately, before you leave, and ask what resources they have for new LV employees. They might even have a MGM version of Welcome Wagon, or a checklist for new arrivals, etc.

** BTW, I'm surprised that you've made a COMMITMENT to move, even rented an apartment, yet you don't know what your salary will be?? For the 3rd time, ASK MGM.

Anyhoo, Vegas is wonderful. Keep your head on straight and do EVERYTHING in moderation.

Thank you for your contribution to my thread. I think you helped to put things into perspective when you compared to your numerous moves. That’s why I joined this board, kind of as a reassurance that it will go smooth. To answer the question of why I cant just ask my employer for the information, and the confusion on getting apartment/moving before securing guaranteed income. Here’s the situation: MGM International acquired the casino I work for here in Ohio back in July (search MGM acquires Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield). However the casino won’t change over until second quarter, April 7 is grand opening. So my issue is that majority of the process will be through email and telephone.

I considered the POD option, but I am only packing a two bedroom apartment. My dad is driving with me, we plan to rent a Uhaul trail and hitch to the back since I’ll only bringing a couple couches, TVS, bed and stands. I definitely plan to get my license situation taken care of within the few days of arriving. I will definitely check into the work card, I know we have the same requirements here to work in the gaming industry.



I will admit that I am starting to stress a bit as everything nears, but that’s more of the anxiety of going so far from home alone. It’s hard when no one really supports you, my mother feels I shouldn’t move but I feel as if I have to take this opportunity. I’m not coming there to party or gamble, I’m coming for the opportunity to change my life. MGM is offering paid tuition at Nevada college and that’s something I am motivated to take advantage of. Congratulations on getting your apt, hopefully it works out for you. Regarding your position, I have a co-worker who once worked with me but changed jobs as a line cook at Caesars Bacchanal Buffet, according to her, she will be starting at around $18/hr, whether it's true I have no idea. So look at it this way, either you will be making the same amount of money or more.

Being alone in a new town is scary so be careful who you trust and DO NOT lend money to people! This is a gambling town. Oh I work nearby where you will be residing. You will be fine in your new neighborhood. If you will be attending school then there's a good chance you will meet a decent person there. Goodluck!

If you are considering UNLV, PM me closer to your move. A bunch of
my friends out in Las Vegas are fairly recent UNLV grads and can help answer
questions on that end. They are also young professionals and would be happy
to meet someone new. (I'm in a community service group with them but they
have a lot of social activities as well).

And no one in Las Vegas pays to park at work...all the casinos have employee parking with no fee.

Clarkcty - I most certainly will take your advice on being aware of people and my surroundings upon learning the city. Also I would doubt that I’m going to be pulling in as much or more than your friend. For one she works for Caesars I’m with MGM, and also I googled the buffet it’s way more upscale than what MGM offers. $59.99 per adult dinner, compared to about $29.99 per adult at MGM buffet. Nonetheless, conversing with live people in the city helps with boosting my confidence before making the leap. So again, thanks for your advice

Mariza- That sounds good to me, I don’t mind networking and connecting with new people. MGM doesn’t start the program until Fall 2019, so hopefully I can get everything taken care of this summer in order to get into UNLV this fall. I am in my senior year at University of Toledo with 24 credits remaining to graduate in Business Management. I had to take a break because my financial aid was cut off, so this is a perfect opportunity. However my GPA is really low (2.0). Mostly from being lazy with assignments and smoking marijuana my entire school career. But I’ve quit weed, got help with my mental health and I’m ready to make something of my life. Better late than never right? I’ll definitely be in contact with you
