Okay, so? Of couse, that's bad for those employees but are they really "Managers"? 440 "Managers" seems high. In any case, people including myself have been let go when times get tough. I didnt leave Seattle when the internet bubble burst and software jobs flaked out. I stayed, and 6 months later was picked up again making more money.

That doesn't seem to high to me.That goes for all the hotels operated by the MGM Company. Not the Grand on Trop/Strip.

Yeah, there are already laying them off here in Detroit and they just opened that one (the newly renovated one) While it is gorgeous, the rooms run over $300. a night and I know they want to keep out the scourge, but who is coming to Detroit? At least not that many! Plus, they have the new and improved Motor City Casino and Greektown Casino is building their hotel.

Same everywhere, I guess.

Okay, that make better sense. I got the impression from the OP that 440 "Managers" in LV were let go. If it's spread throughout the country, while still disappointing, the pain is not as localized.

I'm currently listening to KDWN (LV) and their news reporter just said that most of those 440 jobs are on the strip. MGM owns 10 properties on the strip along with some other project downtown. They also went on to say that it's just a "blip" pertaining to MGM's employee count as they employ over 66,000.

Oops, looks like the number is actually a little higher...

MGM Mirage to cut 440 jobs: report | Reuters

"It's no secret: Business levels are down," Feldman was quoted as saying in the report.

So anybody who was foolish enough to think Vegas is recession proof -- well, you're wrong.

Visitors are actually up. Yet they are laying off people. I think it is because business visitors are up and tourist with disposable money is way down. The Venetian was 76% full and the Palazzo was 49% this past weekend. Just goes to show you that we are not recession proof here in Vegas.
