There are three vectors by which heat (thermal energy) is transferred into or out of the interior of a car:
  1. Conduction
  2. Convection
  3. Radiation

Conduction: energy is passed along from the hotter end of an object to the cooler end in a solid material, or from a hot object touching a cool one, as hot (excited, vibrating) particles transfer some of their energy to nearby particles, sort of like an old fashioned water brigade transferring buckets of water from person to person, originating at a water source.

Convection: energy is transferred in fluids (both liquids and gases are fluids) via convection. Think of heating water in a pot on the stove: energy gains causes changes in density in fluids, and hot water at the bottom of the pot - which is less dense - tends to "float to the top," being replaced by relatively denser, cooler water flowing downward.

Radiation: energy is passed via infrared light - a wave transfers the energy rather than particles exciting nearby particles.

The film cuts down on thermal heat gain via solar radiation. It doesn't do anything meaningful for either conduction or convection.

Most importantly, the film is not an insulator.
