I have a coworker who needs advice on buying a new unit for her upstairs.

She has been quoted 7k for a new unit.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Is this a fair price, or are there better options?

My coworker just replaced his last month. He got a split unit 3 ton for $8000 installed from a reputable local company.

Depending on the tonnage and if it's a roof top/packaged unit or a split, that's probably a fair price.

Yeah pretty fair I would say. The least I ever spent was $4,000 for a tiny condo (820 square feet) so it was probably a very small tonnage but I forget what it was. I’ve spent $28,000 for two separate high end systems and zone control with state of the art energy efficiency. Prices vary by what you select. Most people will choose something minimal with a 14 SEER rating which is fine but it’ll cost more money per month. The best units have over 20 SEER ratings unless they’re ductless minisplits and those can be over 30 SEER, highly efficient.

Recently replaced ours here. Split system, had to replace the 2nd floor unit. ~$4200. My HVAC guy replaced the Goodman unit with another Goodman. 14 SEER seems fine for my purpose, but like Jonathan says, perhaps not adequate for other people's houses.

Is it a rooftop unit? Prices have gone way up for sure. I installed my own, as I do for family and friends also. Most of the install price is in the labor and to be honest I think it's a bit high, especially for some of the shoddy installs I've seen in this valley.

i recently had mine changed out, $8400 inside & out, daikin model w/ a 12 yr warranty. do not, i repeat, do NOT use jonaire. the a/c itself is fine, their customer service is HORRID

Exactly why I do all my own work at my house but I also understand that some people can't do their own work. I do feel bad for people though, as I've seen so many people in this valley get totally ripped off for years and it's sad. I've seen this with every industry.

Mine was a rooftop unit. I believe the price of the A/C was 2800, so the labor on my install was ~$1400. My HVAC guy had 2 other workers helping him and had to hire a crane. Maybe I could've gotten a cheaper price if I shopped around, who knows. I'm not going up there and doing it, that's for sure.

how much would you charge for install only on
a 2nd story unit?
