Anyone else catch the news article on proposed sales tax increase to help fund Clark County School District?

What the hell happened to all this Marijuana tax money that was supposed to help out. Last I heard it was in the rainy day fund ?

I’m against it, I don’t think let’s just throw more money at them is going to do anything. Our kids went through private school so I’m not up on what’s going on in the public sector. I’d be curious to hear if you support the idea. I think they said 1/8 of one percent equaling some 5 Million a year extra.

I’m not sure about the Marijuana taxes but the number I heard was pretty “high” pun intended.

What say you?

Link? I'd like to see the specifics.

There are multiple streams of MJ taxes. There is the 10% excise tax collected by the state is distributed towards education. The money that went into the general/rainy day fund was fees collected by Clark County for MJ biz licensing and fees. There was just an article on this several months ago in the LVRJ.

One thing to keep in mind is that the school funding was just changed from a passed State bill. I'm not sure how quickly it takes effect and revenues get distributed but my guess is there is lag there. Until there is transparency of how much was collection from all streams, where the money is or where it went, I hope citizens stand up and tell them to pound sand.

Totally against it, we already have one of the highest sales tax rates in the country. Call the Clark County commissioners (like I've done) and let them know we don't want higher sales taxes.

Nope, I vote against any tax increase I don’t care what it’s supposedly for. Make do with what you have.

Well we may not even get a chance to vote on it, as they're looking to perhaps just vote on it themselves. So in calling I said it should be a vote of the people, not just seven people for something of this magnitude. So I urge everyone to call and flood their lines and let them know how you feel.

Numbers are listed under County commissioners half way down the page.

BTW, I've asked the lady to pass along my message and although she took down my number and gave it to the commissioner to call me back, not one of them have yet.

Same here. In comparison, the liberals that live and run rampant in WA state seemingly approve every single dam property, sales tax, and auto related tax increase. Ridiculous.

If enough people let them know that it will cost them votes by doing it, that might change their mindes

Exactly, that has been my experience. They never meet a tax they don’t like. It’s truly baffling! It never seems to be enough, either. The US spends more money per capita on education than almost any other country and yet somehow has supposedly mediocre education. The reason I say “supposedly” is I’m going to need to see something besides these statistics. Where’s the real world effect here? Why is nothing of note ever invented in another country?? Why is every useful new enterprise an American company? For our education supposedly being so bad, we continue to dominate the planet in innovation. I’m not so sure I want any changes to our education system, but that’s my philosophy. I don’t judge a society by the lowest members or even the average member; I judge it by its ability to create the best people at the top. Who cares if some other country has better mediocre people? If we have better elite people, that’s what matters.

Yes we have one of the higher sales tax rates. And the lowest income tax. And pretty low property tax.

Easy to make your case when you only focus on a single part of the bigger picture.

Education funding in NV is horrifically low, one of the lowest in the country. And it's well known we have a horrifically poor education system, one of the worst in the country.

I get nobody wants to pay more for anything, but I do believe there some level of correlation between it.

I have friends who are teachers in WA and TX. They laugh when I tell them what teachers make in NV. Why would any teacher move here unless they absolutely had to?

Because CCSD is an amazing deal for any teacher from California who is making above average pay but is in a high cost of living area and won't ever be able to afford a house.

CCSD matches out of state salaries up to 76,000. Teachers here don't pay state income tax, don't contribute 10% to CalSTRS, and aren't required to join the union. Add in the significantly cheaper cost of living and it's a bargain for those currently teaching in Coastal CA.

There's a lot of awful things about CCSD but compensation is not one of them.
