the southwest is nice, much nicer in my opinion than Henderson...more convenient and will have better shopping and will feel more urban as well...

Spring Valley or The Lakes might be a good place to live if working in the SW, requiring a N/S commute that doesn't usually jam up too much. Also, this area is known for larger trees and a greener/more lush environment. Check 89147 and 89117
Living in the SW part of town and working on the strip is not the most ideal. The SW portion of the 215 is a nightmare during commute hours.

I looked at a place at Russell and Rainbow. Wasn't real impressed with the area, it is just that a friend of a friend owned the place and I could have gotten a great deal(apt complex). I thought it looked somewhat older. I could be wrong though.
I loved the Summerlin area. I thought it was more "green" and had more mature trees and such. Even in the apt complexes. I thought Henderson in 89052 was real nice too. Seemed a little more busy to me. I chose Henderson, at this point, because in researching the high schools, Coronado comes out on top.
Is that a fair assessment? Of the school, I mean?

Awesome, thanks, guys. Coming from Minnesota, I'll definitely appreciate the greenery. Sounds like the SW is the corner for me, then.

Seeking more detailed info
I have spent the last 3 days reading all these old posts. Only thing is that it is clear to me I need a really good patient realtor. Someone who I can mesh with because I have a feeling finding the right place for us might take some work.
Seems that with what I have read and what we are looking for that we need to be in the Northwest. Can we find a quality built place, more than 1800 sq. ft. open floor plan for $210,000 or less in this area? We need someplace easy to commute to Nellis AFB (less than 30 minutes) and with a very good elementary school. There are so many listings, which neighborhoods should we look at?
We are looking for a minimum of a 3 bedroom/2 bath/ 2 car garage, but would prefer a seperated 4th bedroom or guest studio like set up for a mother-in-law who is a winter visitor. Want a house that doesn't back up to another house (close side neighbors okay), high powerlines, or busy road. Prefer North facing block fenced backyard with low maintenance desert landscaping. Oh yeah, what is up with all the grass? When I see grass, I hope its fake. Since we are not selling our home here, we have to spend less than $210k using a VA loan.
So is it possible? Also, how do I find a military friendly realtor who watches Fox News with a good sense of humor that can work with a know it all client.

a house that doesn't back up to another house then backs up to either vacant land or a street, but most streets that houses back up to are busy or will become busy, otherwise it'll back up to a shopping center or possibly a troubled park or a noisy school...i think this will be a little impossible...

As the kid points out you may be getting a bit over specified on your site...other than that though not too challenging. Just did a very nice 2100 SF house in Aliante for around 150K.
You can find a school ranking at...
Schools of Las Vegas Rankings
For elementary schools the top 25% are all quite nice.

Hi everybody. Want to buy a 2-3 bdrm condo/twnh for my daughter. She will be working and studying in Las Vegas for the next 7-10 years.
Looking for a good, safe neighborhood with relatively convenient commuting to UNLV. Price is up to 150K.
Will appreciate all advices and recommendations.

For convenience to UNLV, if that is the target, you look at Silverado or South Strip or northern Henderson. Zips 89123 or 89074.
$150K will do a nice little house or a very nice condo. If the kid is really good for 7 to 10 years you should go for functionality not value. No one I know has the faintest idea how it will lay in 7 years anymore 10.
Get a little palace at this point for that money....Watch the HOA fees in the nice condos...they can get pretty high. Then again that may be OK...
