Default Just got back from Vegas...

Just came in last night. Stayed at Flamingo and that wasn't so great, but that's another thread!

We decided that we were going to look at apts/condos instead of renting a house for the first 6 mos so that we would have more time to get to know the valley areas with more time living there. We were definitely tied to looking in areas with the better high schools. We looked in Summerlin area, which I liked the best, but ended up putting a deposit on one in the new area of Henderson for July 1st. It is the Equestrian on Eastern. Nice place. Course it is smaller than the home I am used to but we expected that. The rep, Bill, was great! It is Coronado High School and it is very close, which we liked.

We looked at the Ovation Properties and they were very nice too. Newer set ups I think, like granite counters and I liked the kitchens better, but they were pricier and they would not do a 6 month lease. The one that I saw in Summerlin, well let's just say they should have looked in their model before they showed it. There were dead bugs around and I saw a big black spider on the balcony. Yuck. Then at her desk in the office there was a huge beatle laying at my feet! Now, I know this happens and she said the exterminator had just been there so you are going to see that, but I just think they should have checked it out before showing it. It really wouldn't have stopped me, but the 6 month thing really did it in.

I did not get up to Aliante, which I really wanted to, but I will do that when we come back out and if we decide to stay on, because a lot of the locals did say good things about it. (except the schools, but I would consider private if I really liked the area).

Does anyone have any experience with the Equestrian?

If you have any questions about what we looked at, let me know!

6 months goes by so fast and then you will have your house. Apt living might not be the best, but a little inconvenience will be worth it in the long run, because most of the time you won't be there anyway to hear your neighbors flush their toilet.... you'll be out looking for homes.

The Equestrian in Henderson??? Don't do it if that is the one. One of the busiest for Henderson PD.

I did go to the apartment ratings site and it isn't great but I have to take that with a grain of salt due to the fact that most satisfied people don't write on those sites, but I am concerned about that.

Moreso I am concerned about the Henderson PD comment. Great. It figures. I wish I would have had a laptop with me. There is another property owned by Picerne-Cantera at Coronado Ranch that got better ratings and is still decent schools. I wonder if that would be a better choice?

Maybe the ones in Summerlin would be better? I am not worried about losing the $200.00 deposit if it means a much better complex. Are any good? On the rating sites, there is not much good said about many. I am just thinking the po'd people use the site to rant. Out of 367 apts there were only 17 comments.

I do realize it is only 6 mos and that is good, but 6 mos can make or break a situation too.

So confused.

This was a better choice than Summerlin for one reason: Coronado High School. Coronado is a much better school than Palo Verde (Summerlin) at this time. Eastern has a lot of traffic, but you will be surprised at how easily you can get to the 215 and everywhere in town.

Cjski, maybe you can recommend a better apt complex for kimba since you know about the high crime, etc out there. Hopefully kimba can get the deposit back without too much trouble. Just tell a white lie and say that plans fell through and you won't be needing an apt in Las Vegas. Whatever works.
There is another Picerne property in Henderson, closer to the 215, brand new..someone mentioned it in a recent thread in the last week or two. Maybe you can switch to them.
There is also another Picerne property, also brand new, but its in the Aliante area, and schools suck out here according to ones in the know. But there are always private schools. Ask 5Kings. She knows.
Good luck!

Kimba - I dont know if this was discussed already, but where are both of these places in comparison to where you and your SO will be working? That is definitely something to consider, as opinions on this board are that a 15 minute drive can be tripled, if not more during rush hour.

IMO, if you can get the deposit back, go for the Coronado Ranch property. It's located right on Rainbow Blvd, just south of the 215. Although a bit congested, that area is expanding rapidly, and there is a lot of ammenities in the area (i.e. shopping, etc.). I believe off the top of my head 3 supermarkets, 5-10 "big box" stores, restaurants galore. I'm assuming that area is zoned for Sierra Vista High School?

I know, I'm a little partial to that area, since I live around there, but I think it might be more to your liking, if in fact that you can do a 6 month lease over there.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

As far as the other property goes, are you all talking about the Cantera? It does look nice but as I have found out firsthand the pics on the 'net are deceiving. The Cantera is located on Rainbow Blvd near Warm Springs Rd. The Equestrian is the one on Eastern in Henderson. When I looked at the schools for Cantera it listed both Coronado and Sierra Vista. I don't know why it would be zoned for two, is that normal?

My husband will be working on the New City Center on the Strip. The superintendent of his job lives at the Equestrian, but he does not have children so his needs are definitely different. He says it is about 8 or so miles to the job. Traffic and the commute, although shorter is nicer, is not the main concern for us. It is the welfare of my daughter. (she is 14) He would drive longer if it were for that.

I wish I would have checked into the other property while I was there, but...I wonder since they are both Picerne properties if they could just transfer the deposit? I don't think we would have to pay the app fee again.

Pinkstring--what is the name of the Picerne property in Aliante? Or at least the roads, I have a list of all the properties. And by new do you mean like in the last year or so? On this list I have (from the rep) it has 5 properties listed that are new opening in 2006 so it is obviously an older list but I was just wondering. There is the possiblity that if I get a job I would send my daughter to a private school as I have read many times that Aliante is a great family neighborhood, just not great public schools.

And actually, Doug17, I was very surprised at how quick 215 gets you around town. Sure beat Detroit traffic and we were in rush hour a couple times.
